employed from 2011 (35,515) to 2012 (38,911).
• Those most frequented group practices were
in the only size category to expand its share
of total medical group practices, albeit

Key Takeaway
The percentage of medical group practices with 750 or more weekly visits rebounded slightly,
between 2010 and 2012, possible evidence that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has rejuvenated
consolidation activity among practices. Smaller groups, many of which are already facing financial
pressures, may view ACA incentives to participate in accountable care organizations as additional
reasons to consolidate with other, more frequented medical group practices.
• After noteworthy growth between 2000 and
2004, the percentage of medical group
practices with 750 or more weekly visits fell
moderately through 2008 before stabilizing.
• Still, over the past 13 years, the percentage
of medical group practices averaging
750 or more weekly visits has more than
doubled, to 21.8% in 2012 from 10.5% in 2000.
