Single-Specialty Groups Are Less Likely to Be a Part of Integrated Systems
• In all eight specialties featured, single-specialty
medical group practices were consistently less
likely to be affiliated with integrated systems
than their counterparts with multiple specialties.
• For example, multispecialty general surgery
groups—with a 49.6% system affiliation rate—
were more than four times as likely as such
single-specialty groups to be part of a system.
• Regardless of specialty, the percentages of
medical group practices in integrated systems
grew in 2012, with the share of general surgery
groups in systems rising by 4.2 percentage points.
• Family practice groups (43.1%) were most
likely, by specialty, to be part of an integrated
health system in 2012, while groups with an
orthopedic specialty were least likely (25.7%).

Key Takeaway
With greater focus on cutting costs while improving the quality of care, multispecialty practices
can be valuable assets in the effort to expand integrated health systems. These practices can
bring a sizable group of patients, an established case management system and a strong network
of physicians that make them appealing to hospitals looking to partner in ACOs.
