HOSPITALS/SYSTEMS DIGEST 2013
Key Takeaway
The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) noted a 4.2% annual increase in outpatient
service volume per fee-for-service beneficiary, between 2004 and 2010, with much of that growth
resulting from a shift to hospital-based outpatient physician office visits.
1
This may, in turn, help
account for the more rapid growth in the average numbers of outpatient cases for system-tied
hospitals, which may be better able to capitalize on relationships with on-site physician practices.

Outpatient Case Counts Rise Sharply at System Hospitals
CHRONIC DISEASE
• Outpatient case counts rose at all hospitals,
regardless of system affiliation or disease state.
However, system-tied hospitals witnessed greater
increases for eight of the 12 diseases profiled.
• Hospitals not in systems shed inpatient
volumes between 2010 and 2011 for 10 of
the 12 diseases states shown; system hospitals
recorded declines in just seven diseases.
