About This Map
This map provides a state-by-state breakdown of
the short-term, acute-care, nonfederal hospitals
that were part of the 332 highly integrated health
systems in 2012. The first number is the number of
hospitals in that state that were either owned by
or contracted to highly integrated systems. The
second number represents the total number of
hospitals in that state. For example, of 388 hospitals
in the state of California, 189 were either owned by
or contracted to highly integrated health systems.

Key Takeaway
Nationally, the percentage of hospitals affiliated with highly integrated systems was essentially
flat between 2011 (43.1%) and 2012 (43.0%), perhaps a sign that system administrators are still
evaluating recent accountable care organization pilots (both Medicare and private) and other
newly developed models of coordinated care. Moving forward, provisions of the Affordable Care
Act and continued pressures to control health costs and maximize efficiencies will likely result in
renewed growth in the number of facilities owned by or contracted to highly integrated systems.
