Social Welcoming
Group
to form
Rod McNeil, Lothian and Borders branch Chair, has told Police World
that his branch plans to form a Social Welcoming Group consisting of
branch members.
Rod said,
“Last year we had nearly 200 visiting IPA
members and their families to our area. It is great fun and extremely
interesting to meet people from all parts of the world, who share or
have shared our profession, and to entertain them.”
The idea for the Group is for them to meet and greet or attend functions
when we entertain visitors.
Anyone interested in joining the Group should contact Rod via:

Defensive Tactics
Attracts
New
Members
The recently formed Defensive Tactics Special
Interest Group (SIG) is drawing in new members from across
the globe.
Group secretary, Rob Stenhouse reports,
“We recruited 11
members very quickly, 6 of these were not IPA members and
have joined specifically so they can join the SIG.
At least nine officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary have
expressed an interest in joining.”
Rob is also in contact with Section Sweden regarding the
establishment of a Defensive Tactics SIG in their country. They
too have enrolled members to IPA because of their specific
interest in Defensive Tactics.

Danish
Police
Officer
Visits
Kent
Kent branch has recently
played host to Peter Olsen,
a Danish police officer,
from Køge.
Peter contacted Tom
Witney, Kent’s Secretary,
and a visit to Kent Police Headquarters was arranged. The visit, which
took place in May, included visits to The Firearms Training Unit, hosted
by Nick Budden, a tour of the Officer Safety Training Unit, hosted by
Rob Foreman and a visit to the Crime Scene Unit, hosted by David
Bellamy. The visit was supervised overall by Tim Bayford.
Peter was impressed with all he saw and was very grateful to his hosts.
In the evening, coincidentally, Kent Executive Committee was holding
an ‘open meeting’ at the home of branch Chair, Mick Abbott. Peter and
his partner, Natasha, were invited.
Peter took an active part in discussions and it seems no matter
where in the world IPA branches are, similar issues are shared.

2 Region
Compete
for
Cups
2 Region Northern Ireland Golf Society has been visiting Region
Scotland to play golf for well over 30 years.
As a result this annual
event, first instigated by the Society secretary Stanley Hanna, has
developed strong friendships between the two Regions.
In June 1979 Stanley was killed by terrorist action. As a memorial the
Stanley Hanna Memorial Trophy was created to be contested by the two
Regions. Dickie Simpson has competed for the trophy nearly every year
as he has attended the last 27 consecutive years.
Players from Northern Ireland also compete against the Ministry of
Defence Police for a second trophy called the Perpetual Salver. There are
also a couple of other individual competitions - the Scottish Cup awarded
for best strokeplay and the Ulster cup for best stableford. No player can
win more than one prize allowing several players to get their hands on
the silverware.
The Stanley Hanna trophy was competed for at the Thornton Golf course
in Fife and was won by Region Scotland. The winning team was Alex
Brown, Andrew Girdwood, Ross Mitchell, Sharon Boath, Andrew Mather,
Alan Harley, Paul Hogan and Jim Westwood. The Northern Ireland team
was Tommy Hutton, Gary Canavan, Harry Walton, Mark Kernohan, John
Templeton, Maurice Fleming, Bob Barr and Dickie Simpson.
The Perpetual Salver was played this year at the Erskine Golf Club on the
banks of the River Clyde. Although players initially dealt with an extremely
wet start things soon brightened up as the day went on. The greens were
in excellent condition and some very good scores were achieved. The
MoD team were victorious on the day but friendship was the overall
winner. The Scottish Cup was won by Alex Brown and the Ulster Cup
winner Ross Mitchell - both from Scotland.
