The Cliff
Bryan
Travel
Award
West Mercia branch has
recently launched a new
initiative to encourage new
members to join and become actively involved in meeting
with colleagues from around the world.
The Cliff Bryan Travel Award has been created in honour of their
current branch Treasurer who is by far the most travelled of their
members. The award, of up to £100, towards travel expenses,
will be available to members who organise an international trip
that encourages new members to join the Association.
Cliff first joined the IPA in 1966 after attending a visit to
Amsterdam. The visit was an IPA initiative to get new members
to join the then Shropshire branch.
In the years following this Cliff, and his wife, have attended
many friendship meetings around the world. They have also
used IPA contacts to assist in visiting many countries.
To celebrate the new award and Cliff's contribution to the
branch his colleagues presented him with a handcrafted royal
iced chocolate cake. The cake was shared amongst his many
friends at the 5 Region Annual General Meeting that took place
in March. The cake was made to order by Doodle Bakes in
Montgomery, Wales, by the daughter of the current branch
Secretary, Carole Markham.
The successful applicant of this year’s Cliff Bryan Travel Award is
Dave Meyer. Dave organised a visit to Arnhem scheduled in May
and as a direct result three new members joined to participate
in the visit.
10 Region
IPA Golf
Day
2013
This now firmly established annual event
saw an impressive number of players
take to the greens at the prestigious
Essex Golf and Country Club at
Coggishall near Colchester, Essex.
The still unpredictable British weather delivered a blustery but mostly sunny
day. Although the winds were at times very challenging the day was in complete
contrast to last year’s event - which saw brave competitors battling in torrential
rain and ‘instant’ lakes on the fairway!
Steve Hunt, Secretary of 10 Region and organiser of the event, performed his
usual ‘Mobile First Aid’ service in a golf buggy dispensing drinks to thirsty
participants. Steve pointed out, “
This job was not as easy as it sounds with the
many geese, who apparently live on the course, being particularly aggressive at
this time of the year -‘protecting their young’. On more than one occasion I had
to ‘press the metal to the floor’ to escape an aggressive bird!”
The skill levels were very high this year with IPA members battling away to
enhance their chance to represent 10 Region in the IPA National Golf
Competition in June.
The overall individual winner this year was IPA guest, George Perkins, and
individual runner up was first time attendee Lisa Vaughn-Jones of Braintree
police station. The team winners were event stalwarts IPA member Jack
Walczak, IPA member Carl Dines, guest Trevor Hamilton and another first time
attendee Jan Simpson also of Braintree police station. Winners of nearest the
pin were IPA member John Wrights and guests Bob Rollingson and Peter Ankin.
Back at the 19th hole participants who hadn’t seen each other since last year’s
competition took the time to catch up with each other.
Steve reports that,
“Feedback since the event has been positive with everyone
looking forward to next year’s event. One attendee completed an IPA
application form on the day as a result.”
