JULY 2015

WELCOME I t’s been and gone for another year, but attendees of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, would’ve undoubtedly left this year elated at what was presented to them over two and a half days. In recent years we have generally left the show mildly deflated, feeling that pre-show publisher promises have rarely been fulfilled. But not E3 2015. No, this show kept the tempo at a beat that was practically impossible to keep up with. From the monumental announcements at the press conferences that brought fully grown human beings to their knees in joy, to the exciting advancements in Virtual Reality technology (that in 12 months have gone from being a simple tech demo to a full product that enthralled visitors), the video game show of shows did not disappoint. With the world looking on, the visionary industry creating the games for the new-gen consoles finally delivered a preview of the exciting future awaiting hardcore and casual gamers alike. Fortunately, STACK had someone on the ground in Los Angeles to cover the show, and his extensive coverage begins on page 64. So grab a cup of tea, put your feet up, read on, and prepare to be excited about the future. It’s here!

STACK IS HEADING TO SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2015

W oo hoo! The annual San Diego Comic-Con International is the biggest pop culture event on the planet, generating more interest than a payday loan. It's where all the major announcements are made regarding the upcoming films and TV series on everybody's radar, and this year, STACK will be at ground zero from July 9–12, attending as many of the panels and press conferences as is

humanly possible to bring you all the big news as it breaks. And getting mighty familiar with the layout of the San Diego Convention Centre venue. We'll also be catching up with the lucky winners of 20th Century Fox's Comic-Con competition – if you bought one of the specially stickered Fox TV titles on DVD from JB in April or May, it could be you! From The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

and the Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel, to hotly anticipated new series like The Expanse, Minority Report and Ash vs. Evil Dead , as well as new seasons of Vikings , Doctor Who and Supernatural , STACK will be flat out like a lizard drinking. Follow all the breaking

I n the opening scene of Mad Max: Fury Road , we're introduced to our hero Max Rocatansky (Tom Hardy) as he helps himself to a mutant lizard for a bit of late arvo snack. That's about the only breather you get as the fuel-injected action kicks in, for a post-apocalyptic wild ride like no other. But amidst the unparalleled spectacle, there are some unanswered questions – like who is the kid in the flashbacks that are haunting Max? For fans clamouring for some backstory on Max and fellow protagonist Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), filmmaker and creator George Miller has worked on a series of prequel comics expanding on their history and the dangerous world they inhabit. Mad Max: Fury Road - Furiosa #1 is available now from DC Comics, while Mad Max: Fury Road - Mad Max #2 will be out in August, revealing the origin of the visions and flashbacks plaguing Max throughout the course of Fury Road . From the comic previews, we can confirm that it's a young girl called Glory, whom Max encountered while trying to reclaim his stolen V8 interceptor. For those new to the legend of Mad Max, our beleaguered hero also lost a son of his own, in similarly dramatic circumstances, in the original 1979 film. It's no wonder the loss of another young child became too much for Mr. Rockatansky to bear. Get ready to buckle up once again for another wild ride on September 9, when Mad Max: Fury Road speeds onto Blu-ray and DVD. WHAT DROVE MAX MAD?

SIZE DOESN'T MATTER

P ortraying possibly the smallest superhero in the galaxy, Ant-Man, Paul Rudd intends to demonstrate that size doesn’t matter. “If you’re Ant-Man, some people might think that it lacks the innate sexiness of something like Iron Man,” laughs Rudd when STACK caught up with up with him in Las Vegas recently, where his new role has already led to him being honoured as Male Star of the Year at CinemaCon. “So I think we understand and have some fun with that and don’t take it too seriously. And I know you hear, ‘How can Ant-Man be cool?’ or ‘What would be cool about that?’, so one of the things I’m most excited about is that audiences will finally see that Ant-Man is really cool,” adds Rudd, 46, who stars as former felon Scott Lang, whose special suit enables him to shrink to microscopic size while his helmet allows him to communicate with his namesake creatures. In a 20-year career spanning drama, action and comedy – and

now superhero-dom – Rudd brings both humour and pathos to the little insect guy, who'll also be tasked with holding his own in the lofty company of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and The Hulk in the already-in-the-works Captain America: Civil War. “It’s surreal. Those things happen every once in a while and you just kind of stop and reflect. Sometimes life is magical and that’s how I feel right now. I’m just thrilled I’ll be getting to put the suit on again.” Not to boast, he already reckons he has the best suit of all. “It's impossible not to put on that kind of suit and not feel a little heroic; 'little' being the operative word here! But it looks really cool. From the first time I tried it on, I just really enjoyed it,” says the actor, whose Ant-Man co-stars include Michael Douglas’s ant-suit inventor and Evangeline Lilly as his fearless daughter. A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW

Checking out the billboards for Magic Mike XXL , it’s easy to jump to conclusions given the close-up on the bulging underpants and suggestive “Coming Soon” tease.

R eprising their roles as male strippers in this sequel, Channing Tatum and Joe Manganiello adopt their most innocent expressions when STACK asks them to explain the XXL suffix. “The X is for all the Xtra stuff that you loved in the first one and then the L is for laughter. Lots more laughter,” grins Manganiello. The fact is that before Tatum became a major Hollywood player, he actually did pay his rent as a male stripper, leading him to pitch a version of his own story for the first Magic Mike . Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the movie became a surprise hit. Equally surprising was how much the guys actually enjoyed playing their stripper roles, reuniting in XXL with original cast-mates Matt Bomer, Kevin Nash and Adam Rodriguez. Nobody wants to see a flabby

stripper, yet filming on locations in Georgia and South Carolina – known for their high calorific culinary delights – was a form of torture. “Working out is fun, especially when you can do it with buddies, but it's the dieting that sucks. No cake. But it's really good motivation knowing you’re about to get butt naked in front of thousands of people and then more than that, because it's going to be on screens all over the world,” says

I ask myself: Why did I want to do this movie again?" notes Tatum. "It doesn’t matter how cool you are on stage – as soon as you get into a thong, it knocks the cool right out of you. I’d hoped we wouldn’t do thongs this time round because most of the actual male revues use boxer briefs or tightie whities.” As proud as he is of his manhood, Manganiello is no fan of the thong either. “I was actually quite angry when I found out, post- Magic Mike , that apparently

B ill Murray comedy classic Groundhog Day is among the latest additions to JB Hi-Fi’s exclusive collection of Blu-ray catalogue reissues. Due out on July 16, the celebrated comedy from the late Harold Ramis stars Murray as an obnoxious weatherman who gets DEJA VU IN BLU!

trapped in nightmarish time loop while on assignment in a sleepy small town: every morning he wakes up, it’s Groundhog Day! The 1993 hit – which co-stars Andie MacDowell – remains one of Murray’s best movies and is a must-have addition to your High- Def collection. Murray also provides a memorable supporting turn in another JB Blu-ray exclusive out on July 16: the 1982 comedy Tootsie , in which Dustin

Hoffman plays a struggling actor who frocks up to land a female role on a soap opera. Murray stars as his playwright roommate, while Jessica Lange received the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing his soap co-star and love interest. JB Hi-Fi’s July collection of Blu-ray exclusives is completed by another essential classic – Rob Reiner’s touching coming-of-age drama Stand By

The young cast is headed by River Phoenix, Will Wheaton, Corey Feldman, and an almost unrecognisable (and chubby) Jerry O’Connell, with Richard Dreyfuss as an older version of Wheaton’s character and Kiefer Sutherland as a nasty teenaged gang leader. The huge success of Stand By Me also resulted in the late Ben E. King’s signature song climbing to the top of the charts again. Grab all three, only from JB.

ABBOTT & COSTELLO Part 2

THE

Story

W hen Bud Abbott first met Lou Costello in 1936 he was already an established and well respected straight man for comedians on the burlesque circuit. He was born William Alexander "Bud" Abbott in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on October 25th 1895, and as both his parents worked for the Barnum & Bailey Circus, show business was in his blood from an early age. His mother was a bareback rider and his father Harry an "advance man", who preceded the circus posting advertising bills and arranging free tickets for the dignitaries of the towns the circus was coming to. When Harry finally tired of travelling with the circus, he moved his family to Coney Island, New York, where he organised a number of burlesque shows. He appointed his sixteen- year-old son Bud as box office manager cum assistant treasurer of a theatre in Brooklyn The young Bud found the financial side of theatre management, selling tickets and

complete contrast to the usual outrageous outfits worn by burlesque comedians. He had also learned from his observations how to play the serious foil to the comic, and by sensing the audience's mood, how a sarcastic ad-lib retort from him could frequently receive the loudest laughter. Every burlesque artiste who watched his performance that night noticed that he appeared to have an uncanny ability for making the comic seem funnier than he actually was. Furthermore, they all agreed that Bud Abbott would go far if he ever found a comic to team up with – one who could react to his rapid fire dialogue. Following their initial meeting at the Eltinge Theatre in New York, Bud and Lou performed on the same bill but with separate partners. Over the several weeks that the show

paying wages, tedious. He much preferred to hang around backstage studying the routines and talking to the many comedians his father employed. Some of the burlesque comedians he avidly watched, such as W. C. Fields, Bert Lahr (The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz ) and the original funny girl Fanny Brice, would later become Hollywood movie stars.  One night, when he could not afford to pay for a straight man to support the show's comedian, Bud decided to take on the

role himself. Like all the good straight men he had watched over the years, Bud took meticulous care with his dapper appearance, in

sketch had many variations, but usually began with Lou asking Bud the batting order of the St Louis baseball team. Bud: "Well the players have peculiar names in the team. Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third." Lou: "Yeah! that's what I want to find out." Bud: "I'm telling you Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third." Lou: "You know the guys' names?" Bud: "Yes." Lou: "Well then, who's playin' first?" Bud: "Yes." Lou: "I mean the player's name."

played they became better acquainted, and discussed their various individual sketches and routines. Bud reiterated his earlier comment that Lou’s partner was letting him down. “Your straight man, Joe Lyons, is okay, but he don’t have no style. You have style but you go a little wild sometimes and when you do, you bore the audience. You need someone to pull you back”. Lou appeared a little dejected, then replied, “Yeah! Joe’s drinking a lot before the show, which sometimes makes him forget to feed me a line. I then have to ad-lib to keep the act moving”. Lou continued, “Bud, you have a lot more experience than me in burlesque which I respect. How about us putting an act together, Costello & Abbott has a nice ring to it, don’t ya think?”. Bud shook his head, “You know the straight man always goes first. It’s gotta be Abbott & Costello”. A smiling Lou replied, “OK, partner”. Their first act together was performed at the famous burlesque theatre Minsky’s in New York City. To appreciate Abbott & Costello's unique humour one has to understand the tradition in which it was rooted. Burlesque was a peculiar American institution, a kind of poor man’s theatre with various risqué acts that contained ribald humour and immodestly dressed women. The name was taken from the Spanish word 'burlarse', which means-to mock – originally the acts had deliberately spoofed the hit Broadway shows and operas that were frequented by the rich gentry. Burlesque was loud, uncouth and often downright salacious, but it became wildly popular during the Great Depression of the 1930s. For just a few cents, male patrons could purchase a ticket and be bawdily entertained for a couple of hours. Consequently, burlesque had a sleazy reputation and moralists of the day expressed outrage and demanded action be taken against the burlesque theatre managers. Minsky’s Theatre was closed down many times by the police for allowing their girl strippers to remove too much of their scanty costumes (as memorably portrayed in William Friedkin’s 1968 movie The Night They Raided Minsky’s ). Finally in 1937, re-elected New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia refused to renew the licences for burlesque theatres until the managers adhered to new rules that forbade all striptease acts. This action alone hastened the demise of the burlesque show.  And yet Abbott & Costello's act was never licentious. They certainly based their routines on the old classic burlesque sketches, but always without the heavy sexual innuendos. Their skits were primarily a nonsensical mix of malapropisms and miscommunications delivered with flawless timing, which they

Abbott & Costello perform one of their routines for The Kate Smith Hour radio show

had honed to perfection. Bud played the glib tongued smartarse who would abusively harangue the hapless, child-like dimwit Lou for always misunderstanding Bud's fast talking dialogue, which dissolved into hilarious verbal mayhem. Their quick-witted repartee soon made them the most popular comedy team on the burlesque circuit, but with the now dwindling number of burlesque theatres, they needed to break into the vaudeville variety shows. They signed up with theatrical agent Eddie Sherman, who got them a two week booking in a minstrel show at the Steel Pier Theatre, Atlantic City, New Jersey. They went down a storm; their routines had the family audiences convulsing with laughter and the pair's impeccable delivery of the word heavy sketches astonished their comedy colleagues and the theatre management. Consequently, this led to a ten-week review at the Pantages Theatre, which at the time was considered to be the top vaudeville venue in America.  During this run Sherman got them signed up with the William Morris talent agency, who promised to get the duo national exposure. In February 1938, they were heard nationally for the first time on The Kate Smith Hour, a very popular music and comedy CBS radio programme. They received enough applause from the show's audience to earn them a return engagement. But radio listeners complained that they could not discern Abbott's voice from Costello's, as they both spoke with New Jersey accents. This led directly to Costello adopting a high- pitched voice to differentiate him from his partner. For their next broadcast they performed what would become their signature sketch: the Baseball Routine "Who's on First?" The

for ten minutes, with an exasperated and frantic Lou continually confusing the players odd names with the order of batting.  The response from radio listeners across the country was enormous – thousands of fan letters poured into the CBS studios requesting more sketches from Mr. Abbott & Mr. Costello. Their phenomenal success in this weekly national radio show would now open the door to Hollywood.

A BREAK FROM HOUSE TARGARYEN Actress Emilia Clarke steps out from the wildly successful Games of Thrones to kick ass in the blockbuster Terminator Genisys .

T he last episode of the fifth season of Game of Thrones has come to a bloody, dramatic close – no spoilers here – and even Emilia Clarke, better known to GoT fans as Khaleesi, Daenerys of House Targaryen and Mother of Dragons, admits to worrying about her character’s fate at times. “You never know who's going to get killed!” she laughs. “It's part of the intrigue and mystique of the series that it surprises you and shows you what a dangerous world she lives in. You get very caught up in

the constant sense of menace and the kind of threatening environment that is constantly providing audiences with all sorts of shocks.” At 28 years old, Emilia Clarke still appears flabbergasted by her fame. She joined the Game of Thrones cast a year out of drama school, and within no time, the series was being watched by millions per episode. Her old life was behind her. “I hated working in a call centre and I remember how thrilled I was that I didn't have to do that job anymore,” she recalls. However,

also need to be strong to lift those guns,” she explains, recalling how she trained for up to six hours a day. “I did a lot of weightlifting and kickboxing that got me into the best shape of my life. I may not be as tough as my character, but at least I felt that I could handle the physical demands of working on the film.” While she’s ready for life as an action hero, Clarke warns that getting ready for a round of red carpet promotion is an entirely different story. “There are no captions on red carpet photos that say, 'This girl trained for two weeks, she went on a juice diet, she has a professional hair and makeup person, and this dress was made for her.' I just wish they'd say, ‘It ain't the truth.'"

being a leading actress in the series doesn’t necessarily mean job security, considering the producer’s willingness to kill off main characters with abandon. In her next starring role away from the franchise, Clarke ditches the long blonde wig, becoming Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys , a reboot of the legendary franchise co-starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jai Courtney. "This is such an amazing project and I'm proud to become part of the legend that is already in place and be able to create something new... Every day, you're like, 'OK. It can't get any more insane, or big, or epic, or exciting,' and it just does," she says. Clarke admits that working on such a large scale Hollywood production was extremely daunting but also, of course, exciting. “This is the kind of iconic story that everyone grows up watching and ever since I was a little girl I did a lot of weightlifting and kickboxing that got me into the best shape of my life.

Jurassic Park is the benchmark for dinosaur films, The Lost World should have been great but wasn’t, and Jurassic Park III was a fun B-movie with A-grade FX. So where does reboot Jurassic World fit into the franchise’s fossil record? JURASSIC WORLD RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: Colin Trevorrow CAST: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio RATING: M

O ver the last 20 years, CGI addressed in Jurassic World . John Hammond’s dream of a dinosaur Disneyland has finally been realised; the park is open for business and a massive tourist attraction. But these days, kids would rather stare at their smartphones than at a stegosaurus, creating the need for a genetically engineered designer dinosaur – the Indominus Rex – that’s bigger, badder and scarier than anything that walked the earth 65 million years ago. Needless to say, this hybrid super- predator will not be contained and quickly escapes, threatening the safety of Jurassic World’s visitors and the bank balances of the greedy corporate types who create monsters with impunity. So who you gonna call? Sam Neill, right? Well, no. Who needs a dinosaur expert when you’ve got Chris Pratt, JW’s resident raptor wrangler. Still in Star-Lord mode and prepping as the possible heir to Indiana Jones, Pratt is a predictably affable hero; at one point you’ll expect him to distract a raptor with a dance-off. The rest of the human cast are mostly ciphers; of course there are the obligatory kids dinosaurs have lost their ‘wow’ factor – a fact that’s quickly

lost in the park (who you don’t really care about), while operations manager Bryce Dallas Howard does her best with an underwritten role. This is director Colin Trevorrow’s second film, following the 2012 arthouse time travel drama Safety Not Guaranteed . Hiring indie filmmakers to helm blockbusters is a great idea; often they’ll bring a fresh perspective to a familiar formula, like Gareth Edwards did with the visually creative Godzilla remake. Trevorrow handles the big set pieces with an assured hand, but unlike Edwards, his Hollywood debut looks just like any other FX-laden event movie. Functioning as a direct sequel to the 1993 original, Jurassic World is a terrific spectacle, but doesn’t reach the heights of Spielberg’s classic. Training the raptors is a bad idea, as is a disposable subplot involving the weaponisation of dinosaurs for the military. However, its rousing final act is worth the price of admission alone, recapturing the excitement we felt at the climax of Jurassic Park , while also paying direct homage to it. Consequently, you’ll leave the cinema thinking you’ve seen a better movie than you actually have. Scott Hocking

MINIONS

INSIDE OUT

From the dawn of time, Minions have wished only to loyally serve tyranny… but they just keep accidently killing them. We love a simple idea! The highlight of Despicable Me finally get their own feature, but can you have too much of a good thing? Thankfully the childish humour, seemingly sucked from the souls of The Goon Show and Monty Python, takes on such a life of its own – the rocket-like pace all but makes up for a nearly two-hour film of a one-hour idea. Smart then to set the majority of the film (after a hysterical history lesson) in swinging 1968 London – complete with stereotypical tea-drinking, bad-toothed and altogether eccentric Poms on plain display (even The Queen cops a bit of ribbing). With not one stone left unturned and the fine line of danger and humour danced with immense confidence, Minions ’ true success is the little yellow critters themselves. Voiced brilliantly by director Coffin (in some pseudo African/French hybrid of nonsense), they are a non-stop bath of tear away innocence and silliness that’s so naughty and infectious, it can’t but make the most cynical person guffaw at least once. Overlong running time aside, this will no doubt become a home release sensation with little ditties here, and be paused and replayed for many, many years to come. Chris Murray RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin CAST: Sandra Bullock, Michael Keaton, Jon Hamm RATING: PG

Growing up is hard. Watching a film about it, however, is enjoyable. Inside Out takes you inside the mind of twelve-year-old Riley and her (quite literally) conflicting emotions; Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). Disney/Pixar are the only ones who could have made this work. Superficially, Inside Out is “emotions inside a girl’s head”, but it tugs at the heartstrings in the way the best animated features do, and you’ll be quickly relating to these cartoon emotions as real characters. The film also reinforces how crucial emotions are to everyday life. You let Joy take control, and most of your days are happy. Sadness can turn even your happiest of memories into ones you never want to relive. Fear will keep you safe from electrical cords, while Disgust makes sure you stay away from broccoli pizza. And of course, Anger helps you bring out your inner hot- head when things don’t quite go your way. Disney/Pixar titles are renowned for their unique ability to appeal to both younger and older audiences, and this one fits the bill perfectly. The young ones will love the cute animation, while adults will appreciate the very real emotional depth. And don’t arrive late – the opening short, Lava , is also worth the price of admission, with a song that will be stuck in your head for days after. Alesha Kolbe RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: Pete Docter and Ronaldo Del Carmen CAST: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black RATING: PG

TED 2

MAGIC MIKE XXL

RATING KEY: Wow! Good Not bad Meh Woof!

Our favourite bear’s recent nuptials descend into a nightmare when Ted tries for a kid, only to find out he may indeed not be classified as a ‘real person’ in the eyes of the law. Only a dope smoking lawyer can help him now! Yes, the ultimate swear bear is back, but can he live up to his antics when Hollywood’s most hated and loved stick-poker, Seth MacFarlane, is clearly having trouble extending his machine gun humour into feature-length offerings? The simple answer is yes, and um, no. The genius of Ted was MacFarlane simply waxing lyrical via a fluffy, porn-obsessed stoner child’s toy. When on fire, this can be gut-wrenchingly funny. And here, witnessing Ted throwing full cups of sperm, debating on his Thunderbuddy’s obscure porn collection or driving a car like a ratbag, it’s a full steam laugh-athon. That MacFarlane all but inserts fade- to-black commercial breaks, and the film hits mountainous lulls amongst the frivolity, suggests this could have been an amazing TV series unto itself. Hey, who knows – your move, funny man. Oh yes, there’s a plot involving numerous lawyers, Morgan Freeman, Roger from Mad Men, and the return of the Tiffany- loving ‘Donnie’ – all culminating at New York’s Comic-Con. But don’t let that interfere too much with the fart, boob, porn, n-word, Bill Cosby and Robin Williams gags, and you’ll certainly have a solid giggle. Chris Murray RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: Seth MacFarlane CAST: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Amanda Seyfried RATING: MA15+

Now running his own custom furniture business, the subdued Mike runs into his old stripping pals and spontaneously decides to don the thong and embark on one last road trip to a stripping convention. No, this is really the plot! Lacking any of the self-referential in-your-face parody or cutting social commentary evident in Verhoeven’s Showgirls , MMXXL’s script outline appears to have been written on a bar napkin, misplaced, and then re-written from memory some months later on a small Post-It: “Mike takes off pants, again.” While this may indeed be a scintillating prospect to behold for those so inclined, the fact it takes around 120 mins for this complex ideal to unfold is akin to realising Godot may have been taking the piss. Of course, as our hero hooks up with his fave melting pot of mid-life crisis male entertainers, it’s clear we’re on an existential journey into the secret world of men’s business, right? Channing Tatum is a reliable and delightful actor with natural comedic talent and an enticing cinematic presence, and yes, he can move his body. We only hope he got paid enough here to buy that new house he always wanted. The same people who go, ‘Whooo!’ for no reason when drunk on a hen’s night will love the school eisteddfod-esque finale. Whooo! Chris Murray RELEASED: July 9 DIRECTOR: Gregory Jacobs CAST: Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer RATING: MA15+

ALSO SCREENING IN JULY

The trailer promises a mash-up of T1 and T2, complete with Schwarzenegger, a liquid metal Terminator, reimagined sequences from the first two movies, and a shot of Arnie's original arrival. Word is that Genisys is set in an alternate timeline, so how cool would it be to have a Back to the Future 2 -like scenario, interacting with the events of The Terminator . Anything's possible with time travel. He'll be back on July 1 . TERMINATOR GENISYS

RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: Doug Ellin CAST: Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Dillon RATING: MA15+

ENTOURAGE

After four years and much anticipation, the boys are finally back in town.

T here’s a sense that creator/director Doug Ellin should have struck while the iron was still hot, but fans will easily slip back into the Hollywood party lifestyle of Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his buddies, while newcomers are given a potted history of the characters from Piers Morgan – the first of more celebrity cameos than a decade of The Simpsons . Picking up several months after the series’ finale, Vince is making his directing debut and also starring in a mega-budget remake of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (as a superhero DJ, no less) for agent-turned-studio-head Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). Eric, aka E (Kevin Connolly) is producing; the now svelte Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) is a tequila millionaire; and Vince’s brother, Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), is where he’s always been – living in his famous sibling’s shadow. Vince’s “masterpiece” has been stalled by the need for more money, however hick Texan investors Billy Bob Thornton and Hayley Joel Osment are unhappy with the movie and are demanding changes, including cutting Drama’s supporting role. Needless to say, this triggers ample Ari Gold gold, as he attempts to intervene. Behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing was a huge part of the series’ appeal, but in the movie it plays second fiddle to less interesting character subplots. Ellin seems to have forgotten this is a film, not season nine, and most of these fail to pay off. Who cares if E and pregnant ex-girlfriend Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui) get back together, or if Turtle gets lucky with MMA fighter Ronda Rousey. We want to see Vince’s movie being made, and of course, more Ari Gold and Lloyd. The winning

camaraderie between Vince and his entourage that made the show so good has also gone AWOL here – it’s like attending a school reunion where you find the friends you used to like have now turned into rich jerks. Only Drama’s neverending struggle to be taken seriously still strikes a chord. As in the series, it’s Piven’s motormouth exec who steals the show, from his predictably explosive marriage counselling sessions to his constant put-downs of gay ex-PA Lloyd (Rex Lee), who’s getting married and wants Ari to give him away. Hayley Joel Osment’s redneck oaf is also a highlight: the Sixth Sense boy wonder is currently on the comeback trail following this and Tusk – now fat, hairy and sleazy, he’s suddenly become interesting, and he’s great here. Although meandering and self-indulgent, Entourage the movie gives the characters the fitting send-off the series finale didn’t (the film was already in the planning stages in 2011) and fans exactly what they expect, namely another hefty dose of Hollywood hedonism.
