Discussion

Although one laboratory experienced issues with the

lysis procedure, no negative feedback was provided by the

collaborating laboratories in regard to the performance of

the 3M MDA 2 –

Salmonella

method. During the evaluation,

a small number of laboratories recovered

Salmonella

in

their uninoculated control data for both the raw ground beef

and peanut butter test portions. Additional identification

work was conducted on these isolates at the collaborating

laboratories and the coordinating laboratory. For the raw

ground beef, the isolates recovered from Laboratories

3, 12, and 16 all serotyped as a different serovar from the

inoculating culture, possibly indicating the presence of low-

level contamination of

Salmonella

in the matrix that was not

detected during the initial background screen. For peanut
