6.2.2.3 High Skips or Leaps
Purpose
: To develop rear foot and leg drive.
Action
: The young athlete should perform this drill on the balls of the feet. The rear leg should drive
so that the body is lifted off the ground with the assistance of the drive backwards of the opposite
arm. Their free leg is raised to a point so that the thigh is parallel with the ground and the leg
performing the drive is alternated every step.
6.2.2.4 Back Flicks
Purpose
: To develop correct leg action (thigh high, heel high and toe up) following a drive off the rear leg.
Action
: The young athlete should perform this drill on the balls of the feet, keeping the arms driving
throughout and at high speed. Their knee is driven upwards, the heel flicked backwards towards the
buttocks and the thigh raised to a high position.
