6.2.2.5 Hi-Stepper
Purpose
: To develop agility, co-ordination and speed with the emphasis on bringing the thigh to a
point at which it is parallel to the ground.
Action
: The Hi-Stepper drill takes place over a distance of approximately 8 metres, which includes a
small approach run and small run off. The young athlete should perform this drill on the balls of the
feet, keeping the arms driving throughout and at high speed. The knees are raised to a point such
that the feet clear the foam obstacles and are driven at speed back to the floor. Each wedge should
be cleared in turn so that the young athlete will have performed five high and fast steps on each leg.
Equipment
: An IFTA approved Hi-Stepper which consists of ten soft foam wedges that attach to a
non-slip basemat by velcro.
