outer shipping box. Shipment must be

deceased had not had contagious

diseases

• If body has already been cremated, urn with

cremated remains must be accompanied

by: (a)Death Certificate legalized with

• Embalming Certification from funeral home;

deceased must be placed in sealed

casket, casket must contain only body &

necessary clothing

• Letter or affidavit from doctor certifying that

remains are free from any contagious

disease

• Travel itinerary from travel agency

• Prefectural Order from senior divisional

officer territorially competent in city

(Douala or Yaounde) where remains will

enter Cameroon, authorizing that those

remains be transferred (through Douala

or Yaounde whichever applies) to their

final destination

• Authorization to bury issued by

administrative authorities territorially

competent in area/locality/town/city

where body is to be buried

• Upon importation, cadavers, body parts &

other human remains must be

accompanied by Death Certificate

• Death Certificate considered valid unless

screening officer suspects fraud. In such

cases, quarantine officer is to be notified

• Depending on presence or absence of death

certificate & cause(s) of death, screening

officer follow these protocols: (a)if death

certificate clearly indicated deceased did

not have communicable disease,

remains can be released (b)if death

certificate does not set out immediate

cause of death or any antecedent

causes, if container is (i)hermetically

sealed, remains can be released with

advisory, container should not be

opened, or (ii)not hermetically sealed,

screening officer must contact quarantine

officer (c)if there is no death certificate

accompanying remains & if container is

(i)hermetically sealed, remains can be

released with advisory, container should

not be opened, or, (ii)not hermetically

sealed, screening officer must contact

quarantine officer, or (d)if death

certificate indicated that deceased had

communicable disease & if container is

(i)hermetically sealed, remains can be

released with advisory, container should

not be opened, or, (ii)not hermetically

sealed, screening officer must contact

quarantine officer

• Screening officer must inform quarantine

officer if there are reasonable grounds to

suspect remains have communicable

disease or arrive in damaged state (e.g.

hermetic seal appears broken, container

leaking, container been damaged, or

appears to been compromised) This

applies whether or not death certificate

been provided

• Communicable diseases of concern do not

include HIV/AIDS or hepatitis. Unless

there is another reason why remains are

being detained, remains should be

released

• Persons importing remains where no death

certificate is available can provide letter

from coroner identifying remains &

attesting they are free of vectors

• If quarantine officer concerned about

potential public health risk posed by

remains, officer will issue directive to

conveyance operator indicating

precautions to be taken in handling and/

or transporting remains to destination

• Cremated remains, because they do not

pose quarantine risk, do not require

death certificate. It is recommended

when transporting cremated remains,

importer carry copy of death, cremation

certificate & ensure remains are in

container that can easily be scanned

(e.g. cardboard, wood or plastic)
