• Copies of documentation required under

shipment of remains. Outside of coffin

place, indicating name, age & place of
final destination of body
• Human remains prepared for international
shipment must be placed in impervious
coffin. Where cause of death was
quarantinable disease, as defined in
international sanitary regulations, human
remains must be embalmed (arterial &
cavity) & placed in impervious coffin.
Impervious coffin must there upon be
hermetically sealed, may be shipped
without any other covering, except in
case of shipment by sea. For protective
purposed may be fitted in wooden box, or
one made of other material so as to
prevent movement or may be wrapped in
specially designed fabric

directly with airline from point of origin &
will request airline for space, further
provide information on cause of death,
age & all necessary certificates regarding
human remains
• Airline will then liaise directly with
international carrier. International carrier
will subsequently liaise with their
counterpart in Fiji or Air Terminal
Services (handling agent) to get an
authority for human remains into Fiji.
Carriers will advise ATS the cause of
death, age & including incoming flight
details of deceased & phone contact of
consignee
• ATS will then advise health authority in Fiji
on all information pertaining to deceased.
Health authority (which is the Doctor on
duty at Nadi International Airport) will in
turn permit or refuse above entering
country. ATS will also contact consignee
for deceased to ensure the above is
collected on day of arrival
• Remains must be accompanied by certified
copy of Death Certificate, statement by
local health authority at place of death
stating decedent did not die of
contagious disease
• Notarized statement by embalmer
stipulating embalming process
• Notarized statement by local health authority
at place of death that embalming was
carried out in accordance with standard
US procedures
• Embalmed remains must be placed within
hermetically sealable container or casket,
which in turn must be placed within outer
box constructed entirely of wood
• If remains arrive in unsatisfactory state, they
will not be cleared through customs,
health inspections & entry into country
will be refused. Casket remains will be
returned to point of origin at sender’s
expense

other properly qualified official stating
that transportation will not pose any
danger of contagion is also required, this
certificate must e executed before notary
public & county clerk’s certificate must be
attached
• Body must be placed in sufficiently strong
metal coffin, hermetically soldered, which
is then enclosed in wooden box in such
manner that coffin will not shift. Bottom
of coffin should be covered with sawdust
or similar material, which has been
moistened with carbolic acid solution. If
remains are being transported from warm
climate, body must be treated with
formalin or some other substance that
resists composition
• Required for urn of ashes: Medical
Certificate of death together with
Apostille certification, Post Mortem
Certificate, if possible, certificate from
funeral home or undertaker signed by
official before notary public verifying
cremation of body
• When shipping remains or ashes,
regulations in force in country of origin &
countries en route should also be taken
into consideration when preparing
shipping documents
• Cremains need to be brought or sent in
plastic box, funeral home/crematory/
relative/ friend can bring box to airline’s
cargo department for shipment to
Finland, or can be brought by relative/
friend in person by air
• Box must be accompanied with Burial
permit, official Death Certificate together
with Apostille certification & affidavit from
crematory stating that box only contains
cremains of decedent
