Table 3-7 shows labor force data and annual unemployment rates from 2000-2016 for Santa Clara County,
San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara MSA, state of California and the U.S. This information helps show the
economic health and stability of a community such as Morgan Hill. Unemployment rates also show the ability
of a community to attract visitors and, potentially, new residents.
Between 2009 and 2012 the state of California had a double-digit unemployment rate, but it has trended
downward steadily since then to a more manageable 8.5 percent. The recession in 2009 and the crash of the
housing markets were main factors in the surge in unemployment throughout California and the United
States. Since 2009, the unemployment rates among Santa Clara County and the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa
Clara MSA have trended downwards, reaching 3.8 percent and 3.4 percent respectively in 2016.
