Bicycle Network

Bicycle facilities (see

Figure 1-35)

in the Downtown area comprise bicycle lanes, bicycle

routes, and shared use paths. Under California Law, bicyclists are allowed to use all

roadways unless posted otherwise. Therefore, all roadways in the Station Area are open

for cycling.

Existing Bicycle Facilities

A shared use path is provided along Butterfield Boulevard. Bicycle lanes are provided on

Main Avenue (not continuous), Dunne Avenue, Butterfield Boulevard, Depot Street, and

Monterey Road north and south of the Downtown area.

Monterey Road between Dunne Avenue and Main Avenue is designated as a bicycle route

to connect the discontinuous bicycle lane segments. Green-backed shared-use arrows

(“sharrows”) have been added along Monterey Road to raise drivers’ awareness to share

the roadway with cyclists. Other gaps in the bicycle lane network occur on eastbound Main

Avenue between Monterey Road and Depot Street, and at the approaches to the

intersections of Monterey Road and Main Avenue and at Monterey Road and Dunne

Avenue.

In several locations, bike lanes are denoted with a single stripe creating a wide outside lane

that is also used for parallel parking. Without a second stripe denoting the space for the

bicycle lane, vehicles at times park away from the curb and encroach into the bicycle lane.
