One Day Book Discussion:

Hold Still

by Sally Mann

NEW!

Join cultural historian Lori Rotskoff for a discussion of

Hold Still

,

a revealing new memoir by photographer Sally Mann. Inspired

by a rediscovered trove of documents in her attic, Mann weaves

a lyrical tapestry of memory, fact, and family legend in her

autobiographical account, which includes sensuous photographs

and other images documenting her life and her acclaimed,

often-controversial career. With finely crafted insights and honest

revelations, Mann chronicles her storied childhood in Rock-

bridge County, Virginia; her creative life as a mother, wife, and

photographer; and her commitment to an art form that both reveals

and distorts our memories of lived experiences. In class,

we will discuss the controversy that surrounded her 1992

collection of photographs, “Immediate Family,” while assessing

her retrospective reflections on the subject.

Lori Rotskoff teaches classes in literature, history, and the arts at

the Barnard Center for Research on Women, the 92nd Street Y, and

the Scarsdale Adult School.
