Rice,

John

S.

O'Connor, William

Trant

McCarthy, J. Malvern White, John M. Gullen.

The Association in light of the progressive de

preciation in the value of sterling has been in

creasing the amount paid out in relief during the

past few years and has created a new record by

paying more than £4,500 during the past year.

At the same time, there are many instances in

which the Directors would have further increased

the sums paid were the general financial position

stronger. In seeking to minimise distress it is often

difficult to avoid running into debt. A Grant of

£150 is rarely exceeded but there have been times

when a substantially greater sum would be more

realistic. It is proposed to increase the amount

paid to annuitants to bring them more into line

with the value of the annuities when they were

established.

During the year the annual subscription was

increased

from £1 Is. Od.

to £2 2s. Od.

and

although

this resulted in an

increased

income

there was, despite reminders, a drop in member

ship. However there was a remarkably good res

ponse to a second reminder just after the close

of the financial year and this is not reflected in

the accounts. There are more life members than

heretofore and this is noted with pleasure as is

the increase in the income from investments, the

capital value of which has also increased.

The Association was entitled to a rent out of

property in Cork under the Holmes Trust and

satisfactory arrangements have been made to dis

pose of same and the proceeds will be invested to

greater advantage. The Directors wish to thank

Mr. P. C. L. Halpenny for his great kindness

in managing this estate for the Association for

many years and for his assistance in negotiating

the sale.

Provincial Directors will in future be notified

of the dates of Directors' Meetings and are urged

to attend whenever possible. They could play an

important role

in recruiting members

in their

area.

This is a very worthy charity which should

commend itself to the members of the profession.

Many letters of appreciation and heartfelt thanks

are received each year by the Secretary and mem

bers would be very moved by them. The good

work of the Association must, perforce be un

known to the general body of the members be

cause of the confidential nature of its activities.

To all members the Directors sincerely return

thanks and again request support from those who

may have, allowed their subsriptions to lapse or

have failed to join.
