THE SOCIETY OF YOUNG SOLICITORS

The following committee

took office on

the

1st October 1967 following the result of the elec–

tion declared at the annual general meeting in

Buswells Hotel, Dublin, on the 29th June 1967.

Chairman, John A. Buckley; Treasurer, Nor–

man T. J. Spendlove; Correspondence Secretary,

Carmel O'Halloran; Record Secretary, I. Q. Cri-

von; P.R.O., Thomas Jackson

(Junior); Com–

mittee, Margaret O'Callaghan, Michael O'Mah-

ony, Eamonn O. Shell, Bruce Blake.

In addition to the declaration of the election

results the portion of the meeting dealing with

consideration of the Treasurer's Report and the

appointment of auditors was adjourned to the

night of the October meeting of the Society at

7.30 p.m.

A meeting took place on the 25th May 1967 at

which a lecture was delivered on "Motor Insur–

ance Claims Practice" by D. R. Pigot.

Sub-Committee on Legal Education

This committee under the chairmanship of the

incoming chairman, John F. Buckley, has worked

consistently through the summer and the result

of its deliberations in the form of a report will

be circulated to members very shortly.

Sub-Committee on Forms and Precedents

The chairman of this committee, Esmond A.

Davies,

informs

the executive committee

that

many members and others have shown interest in

this topic and that it is clear that the shortage of

Irish forms and precedents is one of the most

urgent problems which our society should tackle.

The field

is greater than the society's present

resources could hope to cover completely, and the

programme set out below is designed to keep the

undertaking within manageable limits. For this

reason too, the sub-committee are limiting their

scope to conveyancing and commercial matters,

with an eye to those least adequately covered by

present sources.

1.

Pool—

The committee intend to maintain a

reference pool consisting of forms and prece–

dents sent in by practitioners. Every solicitor

in his own practice accumulates material, e.g.

drafts prepared by counsel, which fill in some

of the gaps in the text-books, and if there is a

pooling of the material available,a fairly com–

prehensive collection should result. Since docu–

ments would be kept just as they are sent to

the committee, they would not be represented

as necessarily model precedents, nor would

they be printed, but they would be available

for perusal and copying. The immediate prob–

lem about a place to keep them has been met

by the kind offer of Mr. Gavan Duffy, the

Law Society's Librarian, to afford facilities for

that purpose.

2.

Standard Forms and Precedents—

The com–

mittee has begun work on

the drafting of

certain standard forms of precedents which it

is proposed to print and make available for

sale to members under the following heads

occupational business lettings; assignment of

leaseholds; conveyance of freeholds; requisi–

tions on title; documents in connection with

newly developed estates; enquiries before con–

tract; employment agreements.

3.

Office Forms and Memorandum—

The second

and third of these may seem too simple to be

necessary but by having available printed

drafts, leaving only blanks to be filled in, much

time can be saved, and perhaps a better and

more modern phraseology encouraged.

The committee are thinking of such matters

as notes on taking instructions from persons

buying or selling property.

The material submitted for the pool should be

most useful to the committee in compiling the

standard forms and precedents.

All members who can do so are requested to

send whatever forms or precedents they may have

which they feel would be suitable for the refer–

ence pool directly to Esmond A. Davies, 17 Vesey

Place, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

The chairman would be interested to hear from

any one who either would like to help in the work

of drafting documents, or who has suggestions
