Pre-engineered subsystems
Swagelok Company has introduced
Pre-Engineered Subsystems, a series
of five standardised subsystems for
use in all types of plants and facilities
where fluids are processed. Each
pre-designed subsystem features
Swagelok engineering for maximised
performance and operation, including
integrated design of key safety and
efficiency measures.
The pre-assembled subsystems are
available as a single ordering number
for improved procurement and ease of
installation across a plant.
The range of subsystems consists of
Fluid Distribution Header; Field Station
Module; Calibration and Switching
Module; Fast Loop Module; and
Sample Probe Module.
The subsystems are available through
any Swagelok authorised sales and
service centre, and are offered with
competitive lead times from order
receipt to order ship.
“Swagelok subsystems are designed
to help our customers create fully
documented fluid sampling and
control systems in the most efficient
and consistent manner,” said Michael
Butkovic, vice president, marketing,
Swagelok Company. “Our goal is
to bring together Swagelok quality
products, engineering and assembly
capabilities into subsystems that
ease procurement and installation,
and improve process efficiency and
operation at all levels.”
As part of the development process
Swagelok solicited comments directly
from the field, and incorporated
feedback from some of the
leading minds in the chemical and
petrochemical industries.
The resulting designs offer safety and
efficiency measures built directly into
the subsystems. For example, the Fast
Loop Module features interlocking
handles that help prevent incorrect
sequence of operation; the Calibration
and Switching Module has an integrated
flow loop design for consistent delivery
times across all streams. Users can
select from a variety of options to
configure the systems to meet their
needs.
Standardised design can lead
to improved installation, training
and maintenance at a facility.
Because each Swagelok subsystem
provides consistency in operation
and performance, operations and
maintenance
technicians
can
be trained once and deploy that
knowledge across an organisation.
Standardised builds mean that
maintenance activity can be uniform
and parts can be stocked accordingly,
easing procurement and scheduling
issues.
An application guide is available for
each subsystem to help customers
choose which system fits their
particular application. The guides
include materials of construction,
dimensional information including
weight and mounting holes, and
complete ordering information.
A thorough user manual is included
with each purchased system, providing
installation, operation, maintenance
and troubleshooting information,
as well as individual component
instruction and maintenance cards.
This documentation is included with
delivery and can be passed through
upon integration into end products,
such as analyser sheds.
The subsystems are fully tested for
component performance, system
integrity and fluid flow prior to
shipment, and are covered by the
Swagelok Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Airgas, Inc exhibited its new modular,
high-pressure manifold for laboratory
gases at the Pittsburgh Conference
(PITTCON) Exposition in March.
The manifold uses a proprietary
method that requires no welding or
brazing to connect to primary gas
manifolds using multiple cylinders for
laboratory gases.
“Our new modular manifold
assemblies help us quickly and easily
configure a manifold to a customer’s
specifications and get it out the
door fast,” said Frank Kandl, Airgas
product manager – speciality gas
equipment. “With no welding or
brazing, our Specialty Gas Equipment
Center can quickly assemble these
into a straight, L-shaped or U-shaped
configuration.
“And, these manifolds can easily be
reconfigured at the customer’s location
when future process changes require
the addition or removal of sections or
the reconfiguration of the shape of the
manifold.”
According to Mr Kandl, each gas
cylinder location for the manifold is
equipped with a 30" flexible pigtail, a
manual diaphragm-type isolation valve,
and a check valve at the CGA cylinder
connection. “With this design, any
cylinder can be changed at any time
without interrupting the supply of gas
to the customer’s process,” Mr Kandl
explained.
Airgas, through its subsidiaries, is
a major US distributor of industrial,
medical and speciality gases, and hard
goods, such as welding equipment
and supplies. Airgas is also one of
the largest US distributors of safety
products.
