The Physics Collection and the Chemical Laboratory in hired pre-
mises in the Thott Residence from 1813 to 1819.
From 1813 to 1819 the Physics Collection o f the University and
the Chemical Laboratory was housed in premises hired for the pur
pose near “Kongens Nytorv” in the Thott Residence which is
shown in pictures and on maps.

From 1819 to 1823 the Physics- and Chemistry Laboratory was
situated in a hired flat in Nørregade.
From 1819 to 1823 the University hired a flat on a second floor in
Nørregade in which Oersted fitted up a physics- and chemistry
laboratory. Its lay-out and position are depicted. This house was
demolished in 1907. Only scant material as to the appearance and
lay-out of the house has been preserved, it has been produced in
this book.

On worldhistorical ground in Nørregade.
Oersted’s discovery of electromagnetism in 1820 took place on the
second floor of the house situated at 35 Nørregade. The Danish
edition of Oersted’s research report from the periodical “Hesperus”
is reproduced in facsimile. This was a more extensive edition than
the one of July 20, 1820 in Latin, French, Italian, German, and
English (Annales de chimie et de physique. Tome X IV , pag. 417,
Paris; Giornale di fisica ... Decade II, tomi III, pag. 335, Pavia;
Annalen der Physik ... Bd. 6 pag. 295, Leipzig: Annals o f Philo-
sophy. Vol. XV I, pag. 273, London).
