Flying
the
Flag
Lothian and Borders branch member Allan Turner
hosted some German members for a weekend in
August, 2012. They were happy to fly the IPA flag
during their visit.
Jorg, Anja, Ronald and Silvia attended the Edinburgh
Military Tattoo. They all know the city well and used
Allan’s home as a base during their visit.
Allan drove them around the city on the Sunday
morning visiting some of the more out of the way tourist
attractions and view points.

“Don’t forget your ‘wellies’. It’s quite mucky at the moment…”,
was the advice
from Jane Barnes the farmer’s wife, to ten members of Leicestershire branch
as they embarked on a walking tour of a working dairy farm in Leicestershire.
Southfields Farm is situated in the village of Somerby and Jane greeted the
group on our arrival. As instructed we donned our wellingtons. Mine were old and
black and I hadn’t used them for years but I was impressed with some of the
others that were out on show. One pair was diamond encrusted!
Jane informed us that the farm consisted of 220 acres where she and her
husband, Mark, look after 140 dairy cows that produce 725,000 litres of milk
annually. This is sold locally to Long Clawson Dairies where it is turned into the
world famous Stilton Cheese.
Our farm walk passed through ancient fields and took in stunning views where
the cows fed from the lush grassland. A raised
mound was probably where an old wooden
windmill stood and made an ideal location for a
magnificent viewpoint. Six miles away we could
just see Tilton-on-the-Hill church and just behind
the farm stood the church of Somerby. The farm
pastures are used on occasions by the local
hunting groups and Jane was quick to point out
that the easy sighting of the church towers was
how the sport of ‘Steeple Chasing’ originated as
they raced their horses across the countryside.
On our way back, some young cows became
inquisitive and they followed us back to the
farm. In the barns there were calves that were
only a few days old. Their appearance brought a few
‘oohs and aahs’. Soon it was time to round up the
cows and bring them in from the fields. This was
performed with great gusto and obvious pleasure by
Mark and Jane’s son, Harry, who although only in his
mid-teens, was already an expert on a quad bike.
The cows queued up in an orderly manner, each one
knowing its place, as they entered the milking parlour
one by one. We watched with interest as each cow was
attached to hi-tech machinery. Even with this
automation, it is a long hard job to milk over a hundred
cows twice in a day. Afternoon tea followed - made with milk straight from the
cow and Stilton Cheese - delicious!
We left understanding how hard milk producers have to work. Farming is a 24/7
vocation for 52 weeks of the year and the visit had opened our eyes to the
wonderful countryside that abounds in Leicestershire and Rutland.
