Behind the tourism and shopping for which
this Caribbean enclave is known stands the
spirit of a people who, isolated in this remote
part of the Atlantic Ocean, were able to survive
using the resources of the sea and wood, even
engineering houses to withstand the hurricanes.
The Sint Maarten Museum (in the centre of
Philipsburg) offers a journey back in time
that allows visitors to discover this tropical
destination’s fascinating past. Thanks to the
paintings, handicrafts and thousand-year-
old artefacts on display in the exhibition, the
island still preserves the historical and cultural
heritage that represents its origin. Visitors can
discover first-hand the past constructed by the
Arawak and Ciboney peoples in Saint Martin
long before the arrival of the cruise ships
packed with tourists.

Jenseits des touristischen und kommer-
ziellen Angebots der karibischen Enklave
existiert der Geist jener Völker, die in der Isola-
tion dieses Teils des Atlantiks einzig mit Hilfe
der Meeres- und Holzressourcen überlebten
und sogar Häuser zu bauen wussten, die den
Hurrikans standhielten.
Das Sint Maarten-Museum (im Zentrum von
Philipsburg) ist eine Reise in all die vergan-
genen Epochen dieses tropischen Reiseziels.
Dank der jahrtausendealten Malereien, Hand-
werkskunst und Artefakte, die in der Galerie
ausgestellt sind, bewahrt die Insel das histo-
rische und kulturelle Erbe ihres Ursprungs.
Die Besucher können so aus erster Hand das
Leben kennenlernen, das die Arawaks und die
Ciboneys in St. Martin lange vor Ankunft der
Kreuzfahrtschiffe führten.

El museo Sint Maarten (en el centro de Philipsburg) es un viaje a todas esas épocas pasadas de este
