We heard that it was a great opportunity and they learned a lot that will help sustain their organization.

JUNE 2019 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

Marty’s Memories by Marty Trower

Although much of these past these past months on the island have been gray and icy and generally unappealing, we knew, deep down, that eventually we’d feel the sun and see the result of its radiance emerge from the ground. It seemed to be a collective thing, our gloom. We’d stuck to our routines, riding the boat over to the mainland and back to scheduled appointments and grocery shopping. We’d chat about our ailments and our worries for others and our frustrations in getting things done. More often than not it would be dead low tide when we arrived at the stone pier, the ramp tilted up into the sky. We’d joke about that. We were in it together. It’s here now, the sun, and its nourishment is making branches blurry with soft, bright green and the earth underfoot is also green although still spongy. Each day there’s something new popping up out of the brown earth. Joan Robinson used to organize volunteers to take certain segments of the island and pick up trash and ugly, non-natural things that had escaped over the winter and remained clinging and flapping in the twiggy growth at the side of the road. I should bring a trash bag with me when I’m out walking the dog, I vow, remembering.

We have lost so many community member friends these last couple of years. The Chebeague I remember and continue to feel is the place made up of people like Joan. We all knew them. Always, there was Dick Calder, on his tractor, in his white t-shirt, waving, smiling and better yet telling a story in his clipped, bobbing speech; Diane close by, keeping him moving. Always there was Wayne Dyer, again on a big open vehicle with huge tires, his distinctive voice still in my ears, his smile behind his huge mustache, enjoying being where he was. We, our community, ache with the loss of these huge hearted, strong men. I will never forget, emerging from the loving service for Wayne Dyer in December- so many people feeding out through the church doors, and looking over to see that someone (Chuck Varney?) had rode Wayne’s tractor with its crane over to the church and placed it, bowing its shovel-head gracefully in respect, at the door.

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?

Freight on Bus and Ferry

CTC operates under regulatory restrictions on what can be trans- ported on the buses and the ferry—and these rules are not always the same. We understand this causes confusion for our passengers and have posted on the ferry and on all the buses what the restrictions are. You can also find a chart of the restrictions on the News and Infor- mation page and Freight page of our website. In addition to the regu- latory restrictions, the Town of Yarmouth re- stricts commercial deliv- eries to the Cousins Island wharf to 7:00 AM to 12:15 PM on non- holiday weekdays. Only non-dual wheeled vehi- cles may make deliver- ies. Finally, CTC must re- strict certain freight due to the volume of person- al freight we transport during summer week- ends. CTC will prohibit trans- portation of machines with engines (mower, moped, etc.), lumber, building materials, ap- pliances, and furniture beginning on the 12:15 PM ferry on Friday through the 7:15 PM ferry on Sunday from May through Septem- ber. At other times, transportation is at the discretion of the bus driver and captain.

Update on the Independence The tentative launch date for the Independence is June 21st at 2 PM. CTC will be holding a launch ceremony with christening at Washburn & Doughty. Enjoy refreshments as we celebrate our new ferry! All are invited to the event. CTC will provide bus rides to and from the boatyard. If you are interested in riding the bus, please sign up on the ferry. If you can’t sign up in per- son, call the office to be added to the list. After launch the Independence must undergo a number of sea trials and tests—so she won’t be coming home for a few weeks. Captain Amanda is busy planning a homecoming party on the Stone Wharf for the big day. Check out our Facebook page for updates.

This includes vehicles parked with no or expired tickets and those abusing the “loaner” policy shown above. It is a long-standing CTC policy that parking permit customers may substitute a “loaner” vehicle when the stick- ered vehicle is being repaired. This program may not be used to, in effect, share a sticker between vehicles. Use of a loaner must be authorized by the Office. Parking Policies Enforcement “ Loaner” Vehicle Policy

The delivery date of the Inde- pendence has been changed by Washburn & Doughty due to delays in construction of other boats at their yard. The estimat- ed launch date is now 6/21 at 2 PM. The Independence will have to undergo sea trials and required testing for regulatory approval. Therefore, it is uncer- tain at this time when the Inde-

pendence will be home and able to carry passengers. We are planning a launch party at W&D in East Boothbay and are hopeful that many Islanders will be interested in joining us for that event. CTC will provide bus transportation to the launch. As plans are finalized we will post the details.

June-19 Where’s the CTC Boat?

CTC Trips where crew assistance is available l regularly scheduled boat WITH assistance available We are pleased to announce that CTC boats (Islander, Independence, and Dovekie) will all have Automated Identification Systems (AIS) installed. The Islander’s AIS is operational now—the Dovekie’s will be working May 1st. You can track their location at www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid: 42737/zoom:15 or down- loading an App. Suggested Apps will be posted on our Facebook page. Please be advised that there could be a several minute delay in the transmission of the data, so do not rely on the AIS to give you the vessel’s exact location . During the first or second week in May, Bartlett Tree wi l spray the Route One lot for brown-tail moth. The spraying should be completed before the first bus of the day. The spray may get on vehicles but it will not damage the paint. Customers are urged to park in the center rows of the lower part of the lot to minimize exposure. As soon as we have a definite date, we will post it. However, it would be prudent to park away from trees beginning the end of April. Get Ready for Vacation Bible School! August 12 – 16, 3 PM – 6 PM We’re excited to announce our theme for this summer’s Vacation Bible School – To Mars and Beyond! Explore favorite Bible stories in light of God’s wonderful universe. VBS is open to kids of all ages (children entering grade Pre-K and younger are welcome with a parent or guardian). We play games, do science experiments, sing songs, and, of course, make crafts! Dinner is provided every night for kids and volunteers.

We also need your help to make this happen – between station leaders, set up, providing decorations and food – and so much more. Visit our website ( www.chebeagueumc.org/vbs ) for more information, for registration forms, and to learn how you can help make this year’s VBS the most successful we’ve had so far!

Food Pantry Items — Our food pantry is always in need of donations (both monetary and foodstuff) to help our island neighbors. Some items that we find get distributed quickly are: products with low/no salt or low/no sugar, nut butters, gluten free items, and decaf and regular coffee. Next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up an extra item or two to donate to your island food pantry! (As a reminder, we are unable to distribute items that are open or expired).

Miss a Sunday in Worship? You can always visit our website at www.chebeagueumc.org and click on the link to read Pastor Melissa’s recent sermons. You can also find out what’s going on by checking out the church calendar or our current events page – all available from the front page of our website.

Church Library — We’ve started a library in the back room of the Parish House! Our collection includes Bibles, spiritual classics, writings from modern day authors, and everything in between. If you would like to donate (or borrow!) from the library, contact the church office or stop by the Parish House to take a look!

Online Giving — As you look at your charitable giving, prayerfully consider adding CUMC to your list. Our buildings, programs and community events – from Sunday worship to our music ministry to our food pantry and community support programs, as well as the ability to host weddings and funerals and community gatherings, are funded primarily through your gifts. Your financial contributions are tax-deductible. Visit our website ( http://www.chebeagueumc.org/donate.html ) to give online.

Thank You Letters

“The secrets of life are not shown except to sympathy and likeness.” Ralph Waldo Emerson It’s during this time that we learn how important community is. I so appreciate your kindness, prayers, support and sympathy during this time in our lives. Also, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Sam Birkett for the beautiful poem she shared with me. It was heartfelt by my family and fitting for my dad’s life as we returned him to City Island, his childhood home. Sincerely, The Paradise Family Thank you to a Good Samaritan On May 5, I had just started unloading packages at the CTC Route 1 parking lot when I fell flat onto the concrete. My left toe had caught in one of the soft handles of a cooler bag, my first package to be unloaded. A very nice man brought me paper towels and water and then proceeded to unload the rest of my packages. When I realized I should go to Mercy’s express care facility on Route 1, (a good idea as I needed 2 stitches in my lip) this nice man offered to shepherd my packages to the Stone Pier. Unfortunately, in my state of mind we never introduced ourselves; so, I don’t know who to thank. Thus, this public thanks to my Good Samaritan. Gwendolyn Stevens

Community Matters: Pitch in at Chedemption

Wow!! In 2018, volunteers from 13 island nonprofits packed and shipped off well over 150,000 cans and bottles. Impressive as those numbers sound, this task is never ending, and we need your help to keep this Chebeague Island Council program running. The schedule for each nonprofit is listed below and posted on the back wall of the Chedemption shed under the roll of plastic bags as well as on the door of the Community Center. Each nonprofit is asked to provide 27 hours of coverage during their week in return for a share of the proceeds. Your participation benefits each participating nonprofit, keeps several tons of trash from our waste stream, and helps ensure that our roadsides are free from bottle and can litter. So please call your favorite nonprofit and sign up for a slot or two! The Chedemption “Baggettes” could also use your help with the weekly task of loading boxes and bags for transport to Chandlers Wharf every Thursday at 7:45 a.m. Meet us at the transfer station. For more information, call Ann Thaxter at 846-3274.
