St George’s Hall

3

St George’s Hall was built in the

early 1800s. It was built as a

space for music festivals and

the Civic and Crown courts.

It is regarded as one of the finest

neo-classical buildings in the

world. Today the Hall is used

for exhibitions, tours, corporate

events and weddings. However,

the ground floor and basement

still house holding cells

for prisoners and the

condemned cell.

St John’s Garden

4

St John’s Garden is a memorial

garden and it is part of

theWilliamBrown Street

conservation area. It was

originally the location of a

church and a cemetery, but the

graveyard was closed in 1865

and the church was demolished

four years later to make space

for the gardens.The sculptures

in the gardens display listed

monuments from the late
