number 1 on this map. When you arrive at

each point read the description of the sight.

You will have the chance to discover and

admire many of the most beautiful and

important sights of this city.

Entrances not included.

St Luke’s Church

3

The site of St Luke’s Church

was granted to the town of

Liverpool in 1791 by Lord

Derby. The Foundation stone

for the church was laid in 1811

but it took decades before the

church was ready. The Church

was built of free stone and it is

one of the finest examples of

florid Gothic architecture in the

UK. The Church was once the

sight of elaborate weddings and

beautiful bells, but now it is only

an empty shell. The church is

lacking in roof and windows due

to it being hit by a incendiary

device which resulted in a fire

and destroyed the Church.

Liverpool Cathedral

4

Liverpool Cathedral took 74 years

altogether to build. It was not

finished until 1978.The Liverpool

Cathedral is the largest in the

UK and the fifth largest in the

whole world; the under-tower

vault is the highest in the world

and the bells are the biggest

and heaviest in the world.The

Cathedral managed to survive

two world wars, recessions

periods and great hardship in the

port of Liverpool.The organ in

the Cathedral is one of the largest

in the world and the sound of the

stops is aided by a nine second

reverberation in the Cath.
