The International Slavery

Museumwas opened on

23 August 2007, which is

the date of the annual Slavery

Remembrance Day and the year

2007 was the bicentenary of

the abolition of the British slave

trade. The Museum is located

in the Albert Dock only yards

away from the dry docks where

the 18

th

century slave trading

ships were repaired and fitted

out. The Museum it the only

national museum in the world

dedicated to the history of the

transatlantic slave trade and its

legacy. The Museum addresses

such issues as freedom,

identity, human rights,

racial discrimination

and cultural change.

Albert Dock

Albert Dock was originally

opened in 1846 and was used

as a fullyworking dock for 126

years.When the dock was closed

it underwent a big restoration

and was opened again as a

visitor attraction in 1988.The

Dock is situated on the banks

of River Mersey and it is listed

as a UNESCOWorld Heritage

site.Today the Dock is the most

visited free UK attraction outside

London.The site is 1.25 million

square feet and when it was built

to be a working dock it took five

years to built it.The creation

of the dock is a testament to

innovation and engineering feats.
