API 6D valves from Turkey new on to the
international market
Termo is an established valve brand
from Turkey, known for its quality and
range of products. As the pioneer of
new technologies in the local market
for 45 years, the company exports
about 40 per cent of its total production
around the world.
Gedik Casting & Valve, the owner of
Termo, has started to produce new
valves in accordance with API (American
Petroleum Institute) 6D norms, which
are used in natural gas and oil storage
and transmission projects, as well as in
petrochemical industry.
Regarding the new product, Termo
exports manager Gokhan Turnali said,
“Energy demand of Turkey and Europe
keeps increasing. Turkey has role of an
energy gate between Europe and energy
sources in the Middle East and Caspian
Region. So many oil and natural gas
transmission projects cross over Turkey.
“Furthermore, in Turkey there are many
natural gas and oil storage facilities.
We observed a high demand on
this product at an affordable price
not only in Turkey but also in the
region. Following an R&D project which
lasted about a year, we managed to
manufacture the first prototypes of API
6D valves in late 2011 and we started
mass production in the beginning of
2012. Our production is geared for
international market as well as local
market.”
Termo API 6D valves are produced at
Gedik’s new state-of-the-art foundry in

type ball valves; 2" to 12" Class 150-
300 (with flange); excellent sealant at
closed position; low pressure loss; full
bore; three-piece split body; low torque
requirement; mounting pad provided;
self relief in the body cavity; urgent
grease injection device; and bi-sealing

Main steam isolation valve for nuclear plant
provided by US company
Flowserve Corporation, a provider of flow
control products and services for global
infrastructure markets, has shipped the
first of several main steam isolation
valves (MSIVs) to the Sanmen Nuclear
Power Plant, located in the Zhejiang
Province of China.
The MSIVs will be installed in Unit 1
of the plant, the first Westinghouse
AP1000
®
nuclear power plant ever built.
The shipment relates to several multi-
million dollar valve orders for the China
nuclear market that Flowserve has
booked since early 2010.
The massive MSIV, the largest of its kind
produced by Flowserve, uses a Flowserve
Edward gas/hydraulic actuator. As part of
the secondary system of the pressurised
water reactor (PWR), the MSIV isolates
the main steam line between the steam
generator and the turbine.
The total assembly of the valve and
actuator together stands more than
6.1m (20ft) tall and weighs more than
25,900kg (57,000lb). The MSIV is
designed to close within 3 to 5 seconds,
which can be critical in the event that
plant operations need to be shut down
quickly. The AP1000, the Westinghouse
advanced passive pressurised water
reactor, incorporates a new and
innovative design that requires 50 per
cent fewer safety-related valves, 80 per
cent less safety-related piping and 85
per cent less control cable. This design
also utilises gravity in lieu of mechanical
equipment to provide emergency
cooling water flow.
“The global nuclear power industry
requires excellence in performance,
safety standards, aftermarket experience
and capabilities,” said Arnold Wallace,
president, Flow Control Operations.
“After earning the opportunity to work
with Westinghouse, Flowserve is proud
to provide MSIVs for their new AP1000
nuclear power plant.”
Flowserve Corp, operating in more than
55 countries, produces engineered
and industrial pumps, seals and valves
as well as a range of related flow
management services.
