Valve components cleaned efficiently
Thompson Valves Ltd, a manufacturer
of valves and flow control products,
has replaced its ageing in-line washing
system with a batch cleaning machine
that is proving to be much more
versatile in operation. Called Elba, the
aqueous machine is supplied in the UK
by Turbex.
The old washing, rinsing and drying line,
which was also water-based, processed
components on a continuous belt and
did not have the ability to rotate the
parts. As a result, there was a risk of
water being retained within the valve
bodies and other components, causing
staining and also oxidation while they
were in storage. Other problems of the
older system were its large footprint and
difficulty in obtaining spares.
In contrast, the programmable Elba has
the ability to use three types of cleaning
cycle when a batch of components
is in the machine. First, to prevent
components clashing together, the
basket is held stationary in its home
position while jets run around it, spraying
water from every angle. This is ideal for
cleaning light, simple parts, perhaps
with turned diameters.
A second cleaning program involves
rocking the basket through ±10°,
affording extra access to components
for better cleaning, while still avoiding
contact between them and potential
damage.
Thirdly, one or several larger parts are
fixed into a basket, which is rotated
through 360°. A patented feature of
the machine is the ability to adjust
the movements of the holding basket
and spray jets individually, allowing
them to rotate in the same or opposite
directions.
Such cycles provide excellent
penetration into the most awkward
areas of particularly complex valve
components for the removal of oil,
coolant, tapping grease, swarf and
other contaminants from the previous
machining processes.
Components range from 25 to 500mm
long and are produced from a variety of
metals, mainly stainless steel, carbon
steel, aluminium and brass. Stainless
steel parts undergo a detergent wash
and rinse cycle at 50°C, followed by
compressed air drying at 70°C within
the machine. Processing of the other
materials omits the rinse stage for
speed, as all components are in any
case cleaned ultrasonically before
assembly.

Mechanical fittings offer speedy reliability
PE pipes specialist GPS PE Pipe
Systems has launched a new range
of WIS 4-32-19 compliant barrier pipe
fittings following successful industry
trials. Available in sizes from 90 to
180mm, the new range of mechanical
fittings is suitable for all Protect-Line
barrier pipe installations, and is ideal
for projects where lengths of pipe
cannot be easily butt-fused or joined by
electrofusion.
Fully end load bearing, complying with
WIS4-24-01 (Type 1), low profile and
lightweight, the new fittings have been
designed to create reliable connections
with a quick and simple mechanical
action.
The installer simply pushes the pipe
ends over the insert liner, slides a
stainless steel shell coupler over the
pipe ends and tightens the fitting with a
standard torque wrench.
Jon Briafield, GPS product
manager,
commented,
“Protecta-Line is the UK’s
market leading barrier pipe
and the launch of this new
range of Protecta-Line
mechanical fittings means
that customers who already
rely on us for an effective
barrier pipe solution can now
trust us to help them speed
up installations without compromising
barrier pipe integrity.”
Mr Briafield further explained, “The
fittings are independently proven to
meet the requirements of WIS 4-32-
19 without the need for any pipe end
preparation or protective wrapping as
part of the proven Protecta-Line system.
With no specialist tooling required,
installation is much quicker and easier,
even in tight, awkward spaces. That’s
not only a major advantage during
installation of the pipe, but also reduces
downtime and disruption during repairs,
renovation and maintenance.”
Protecta-Line has been used by the
water industry for the past 15 years,
ensuring safe and secure drinking water
supplies.
