Although most o f the streets o f the mediæval town plan are preserved in

spite o f rearrange ments af ter the great fires o f 1728 and 1/95 and other fires,

these nevertheless caused considerable improvem ents to the street system.

The first attempt to create a main road in east-westerly direction in the old

part o f the town was made by the laying out o f Nygade a fter the fire m

1685, and the first conflagration o f 1728 caused a series o f street regulations,

although the proposals o f the reconstruction comm ittee (fig. at page 175)

were not carried out in detail.

In particular the cutting through o f Frederiksberggade and, e. g. the ex -

tension o f Knabrostræde and Kokkegade, together with the laying out o f

Kultorvet, were o f great importance. Several streets were straightened and

widened, and in this connection it was provided that pavements should be

k ep t clear o f any building. The order demanding all wcills to be built of

solid masonry met, how ever, with strong disapproval, and had to be revised,

the result being that a great part o f the new buildings were erected in brick-

and-timber. The figures at pages 181 and 190 illustrate typ ical houses

erected a fter the fire o f 1728, see also the drawing at page 180.

Another fire in 174-9 brought about the widening o f Raadhus stræde,

whereas a large number o f smaller fires in the follow ing period did not

eause any important changes.

In the second great conflagration of 1795, the main part o f those districts

o f the town which were saved in 1728 were com p letely destroyecl. Un-

fortunately, the plans fo r a thorough regulation o f the devastated areas did

not materialize even then.

The most significant results were the clearance o f Højbroplads and the

amalgamation o f Gammel- and Nytorv. As a result o f the new building

code, all corners at street crossings were cut (see fig. page 266). The town

itself changed in character due to new circhitectural standards, but a great

many af the new buildings were nevertheless o f poor quality. The figures

at pages 189, 192, and 266 show streets influenced by arcliitectural standards

a fter the conflagration o f 1795.

By the bombardement in 1807, yet another part af the town was destroyecl,

which caused the laying out o f Hausergade with Hauserplads and Bispe-

torvet.

The figure cd page 193 indicates the quarters destroyed in the 3 great fires.

The fig ure cd page 194 illustrcdes the street regulations in the mediævcd

part o f the town caused by the con f lagrations.
