SIM-
PLE
SYRUP,
COMMONLY
CALLED
"GUM."
Take
two
pounds
of
rock
ca'ndy
or
2-|
pounds
of
loaf
sugar
and
place
in
one
quart
of
water
and
allow
to
simmer
over
a
slow
fire
until
thoroughly
dissolved
(care
should
be
taken not
to
allow
it
to
come
to
a
boil,
as
the
gum
in
that
event
is
apt
to
spoil)
;
filter
through
a
clean piece
of
cheese
cloth,
and
your
gum
is
ready
for
use.
HOT
MILK
PUNCH.
Use
a
mixing
glass.

of
sugar.

of
brandy
(Hennessey).

St.
Croix
rum.
Fill
the
glass
with
hot
milk,
stir
well
with
spoon
while
filling;
grate
a
little
nut-
meg
on
top,
a'nd
serve.

PUNCH.
Use
a
punch
glass.
