National Standards of Practice for Case Management

Risk

Exposure to the possibility of loss, injury or other adverse circumstance.

Risk Assessment

The systematic evaluation of local risk factors, carried out to determine the degree to which risk is

present and to develop a risk management strategy including interventions.

Risk Stratification

The process of categorising individuals and populations according to their likelihood of experiencing

adverse outcomes.

Role

A general and abstract term that refers to a set of behaviours and expected consequences that

are associated with one’s position in a social structure. It is common practice for agencies and

employers to use a person’s title as a proxy for their role.

Skill

A specific ability or integrated set of abilities (e.g. motor, sensory, cognitive or perceptual) which

evolve with practice and application. Skills have to be learnt or practised to a standard that will

enable the effective performance of a task or subsection of a task.

Special needs

May Include, but is not limited to, the specific requirements of individuals from: ATSI/CALD

communities/backgrounds, rural and remote areas, financially or socially disadvantaged

communities/backgrounds; veterans and individuals who are care leavers, homeless or at risk of

becoming homeless and/or have an illness, injury or mental, emotional, behavioural, intellectual,

learning or physical disability.

A formal written statement of expected performance.

Standards

available resources. Sustainability is not just related to the case management program timelines,

but should consider needs post disengagement from case management.

Voluntary Assumption

of Risk

Refers to a Client who knowingly and willingly consents to assume full legal responsibility for a risk

(i.e. exposure to the possibility of loss, injury or other adversity) having been informed of, either

expressly or impliedly, and understands the full nature and likelihood of the risk eventuating.
