Babu, Benoy Krishna (1908-1930)
Took part in the Nationalist movement.
Baji, Rant (Orissa)
Boatman and volunteer of the Praja Mandal
(Dhenkanal state); worked against the reign of
terror (19.38). Carried out by state police and
troops
in
Nilkanthapur ghat in the Brahmini river; died of
the injuries inflicted by one of the soldiers, while
refusing to ferry them across the river Brahmini;
his bravery and patriotism has been immortalised
in
the
poem ‘ Boatman’ by the famous Oriyapoet, Sachi
Rotary.
Basu, Satyendranath (1908-West Bengal)
Member of the revolutionary parties; one
of
the founders of Ananda Math- a revolutionary se-
cret society; worked for Swadeshi movement.

Member of The Hindustan Socialist Repub-
lican Association, executed at the Gorakhpur dis-

Biswas, Basant Kumar (W. Bengal)
He was the follower of Rash Behari Bose;
participated in the plot to kill Lord Hardinge - the
PROMINENT LEADERS
Viceroy of India (Delhi conspiracy) - (1912) and
killed attendant: sentenced to death in 1915.
Bardoli, Gopinath (1950)
One of the builders of modem Assam; led
the
Congress Party in Assam Legislative Assembly in
1937; became Premier twice, 1938, 1946; died in
1950.
Bose, Khudiram (1889-1908, W. Bengal)
Worked against the partition of Bengal
(1905), organised a plot to kill Kingsford-
Sessions
judge
(Muzaffarpur, Bihar); died at the Muzaffarpur
jail.
Bose, Rash Behari (1886-1945, W. Bengal)
Planned to kill Lord Hardinge - the British
Viceroy of India; planned a simultaneous revolt
all over North India in alignment with Ghadar
Party;
escaped to Japan (1915), took citizenship, contin-
ued to work for Indian independence. Died at
Tokyo (Jan 21, 1945).
Chaki, Prafulla Kumar (E. Bengal)
Took part in the plot to kill Kingsford- the
Sessions judge of Muzaffarpur, Bihar, committed
suicide (1908).
Chaphekar Balakrishna (1873-99, Poona)
Imparted military training to the youth,
took part in the killing of Mr. Rank the Plague
Commissioner of Poona; arrested and hanged.
Chaphekar, Damodar (1869-98, Poona)
Organised society for training youths, made a
plan to kill Mr. Rank, Poona Plague
Commissioner.
Chaphekar, Vasudeva (Maharashtra)
Helped in giving military training to Indian
youths; assisted in the killing of Mr. Rank, the
plague commissioner of Poona; died in 1899.
Chattopadhyaya, Birendranath
(1878-1946, Bengal)
Studied at England and worked with
revolutionaries
there;

’ in Paris. He worked as Prof. of Urdu at
Moscow University, died in exile (Moscow) in

(1919); presided over Muslim League session
(Amritsar 1919) ; played important role in
Khilafat

ment and Non co-operation movement; one of the
