There are a couple of hectic months ahead for the travelling wire and cable family with wire China at the end of September followed just a month later by Wire and Cable India. These two exhibitions provide a startling insight into the growth, not only of those countries, but of the region. Both China and India have remarkable growth records, and investment from the respective governments for years to come will ensure that the automotive, infrastructure, construction and telecommunications markets continue to prosper. Indeed, in the case of India, the economy – already at impressive levels with GDP due to grow by seven per cent this year – is scheduled to grow ve-fold in the next 20 years. China is investing 600 million RMB a year into its high speed train service alone and more than 20,000km of railway line is to be constructed in the next three years. Both exhibitions are natural ‘must attend’ venues for the wire and cable industries. To read about some of the exhibitors at wire China see page 52. The show coverage for Wire and Cable India starts on page 65. Full coverage of the show in Mumbai is in the November issue of our sister publication, Wire & Cable ASIA . Messe Düsseldorf are also making the headlines in this issue for a very di erent reason. The company behind the leading exhibitions in the industry around the world is playing its part in encouraging technology transfer between research and industry. It presented a cheque for €10,000 to the Institute of Metal Forming at the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology to encourage innovation. Looking to China, India and the future

Logistics success for 65-day China trip

Possibly one of the most spectacular heavy component transports began on the premises of Siempelkamp Maschinen- und Anlagenbau in Krefeld, Germany, in May. The components for a closed-die forging press which, with a press force of 50,000 tonnes, is the largest press built to date in Germany, and the components of a smaller 12,500t press, started on the journey to China. As part of the first partial delivery, 25 parts with weights between 89t and 287t left the Siempelkamp premises to be transported to the port of Longkou, China, in 65 days. Both presses are the heart of a newly designed forging mill which will manufacture forged parts made of aluminium and titanium alloys for the Chinese aircraft industry. Siempelkamp supplies both presses from a single source including the design, the casting and the machining of the parts all the way to their installation and start-up at the customer’s site. The 50,000t press for Nanshan is the largest press ever built by Siempelkamp, as well as in Germany. Not only are the pressing forces of both presses gigantic, the larger press features dimensions that are immense, including a lower press beam with a weight of 287t and a movable beam with a 11m long centrepiece. Such figures put great challenges on the transport of the parts. The first lot of 25 heavy parts with weights between 89 and 287t is now on its way to China. This transport includes the foundation beams, the upper and

▲ ▲ The lower press beamweighs 287 tonnes

comparison, an empty A380 type 800 only weighs 275t. “The dimensions of the individual components and the high weights present many challenges for us and required a long planning phase. The deadlines, which we agree upon with our partners and customers, have to be guaranteed,” said Ronald Hammerbeck, logistics manager at Siempelkamp. From the Siempelkamp premises in Krefeld all press parts are transported to the container terminal in the port of Krefeld-Uerdingen. From there the parts are loaded via a 400t crawler crane onto three different inland going vessels. In Antwerp, the cargo was reloaded onto a seagoing vessel. To do so, onboard cranes are used. Parts from sub-suppliers and press component parts already delivered to the sea port were then loaded for the journey to the port of Longkou, China. Once they arrive they have to be loaded onto heavy goods transporters and transported to the customer’s premises 20km from the port. The parts will have to be stored here, according to their order of installation, until they are needed. Altogether three lots of similar sizes will be shipped in the following months. Additionally, approximately 150 sea containers with press supplies, tools and assembly equipment will be shipped. The transport expenses amount to approximately €3.5m. The installation of the presses was scheduled to begin in July and both closed-die forging presses are expected to start operation in early summer of 2015. bottom press beam, the vertical frame components, the bottom tables as well as the movable beam. Two additional transport units with a similar volume will follow so that a total of 20,000t of cargo in 150 containers will be transported from Krefeld to the customer’s construction site in China. All components with a weight above 200t are initially positioned by a self-propelled modular transporter in such a way that the loading of the actual transporter and the transport out of Siempelkamp’s production facility becomes possible. Each component is loaded individually onto a heavy goods transporter. The towing and push-back vehicles, each powered by 680 horsepower – together weigh 70t. On top of that is the trailer (50t) and the press component part (maximum 287t), adding up to a maximum total weight of 400t. For

reduction in manufacturing costs results from low disposal costs and savings in the precious metal used. Preventing the pickling process reduces the incidence of used acids and process baths. For a copper coating system for CO 2 welding wire, the operating life of a copper sulphate bath (volume around 1,000l) was formerly a week. With the process, the operating life of the same bath is two to three months. Staku-Anlagenbau GmbH – Germany Website : www.staku-gmh.de

New overseas business contract secured by Essex cabling company

Elmeridge Cable Services (ECS) based in Essex, UK, designs, supplies and installs high voltage cable systems for electricity network owners and operators in the UK and overseas. In order to become recognised as a major supplier of high voltage systems worldwide, managing director Jim Attwood contacted UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in 2013 for advice on exploring new partnerships with major cable manufacturers and civil contractors in the Middle East, South Africa and the Far East. “Up to this point we’d increased our international business but mainly through ad hoc activity. “We decided that we wanted to be much more strategic but didn’t know how to go about doing this,” explained Mr Attwood. “These particular overseas markets are attractive because their existing cabling networks are old and inefficient and our expertise lies in this area.” He was put in touch with UKTI trade advisor Derek Noakes who, after an initial one-to-one export review session, recommended that he sign up to the Gateway to Global Growth programme, a 12-month service offering experienced exporters strategic support tailored to their needs. Mr Noakes explained: “ECS were already exporting but they didn’t have a formal

other communications with non-English speaking export markets. “During an ECR, a consultant will spend up to three hours going through any language or cultural issues a company may be facing when trading overseas,” added Mr Noakes. Since contacting UKTI in 2013, ECS now carries out 10-15 per cent of its business overseas and has recently secured a significant contract with an energy supplier in Malaysia. “The free advice we received via Derek’s extensive network of contacts in Malaysia significantly speeded up the process of securing this contract. “Not only were we given crucial advice on work permits and visas but the British Embassy team in Malaysia even carried out a background check on the supplier,” said Mr Attwood. “UKTI has really helped us do what we needed to do in order to successfully look for more international business and secure contracts.” Elmeridge Cable Services Ltd – UK Website : www.elmeridgecableservices.com

export strategy in place. The Gateway programme helps companies check and balance what they’re already doing and determine their objectives. “It gives them a 360-degree view of exporting. I encouraged Jim to prioritise and formalise an action plan, including budgets and starting dates, before he pursued further expansion.” “Through writing a plan I’m confident that we now have a much more structured and better thought-through approach as to how we will achieve our overseas objectives,” said Mr Attwood. As part of the Gateway programme he also attended a two-day Export Growth workshop at the Cranfield School of Management. “The Cranfield course was excellent for me and left me buzzing with ideas,” he said. “Not only did it give us the tools to effectively segment our markets but it also helped us rule out those which weren’t right for us, such as most North African countries due to the structure of their existing cabling networks.” He is also currently undertaking an Export Communications Review (ECR), which helps companies improve their web and

Pre-shipment inspection at Eurolls as machine heads for Brazil

Eurolls was recently visited by Fabio Almeida from Engineering of Lincoln do Brazil for the contractual pre-shipment inspection of the multi-pass drawing line with cleansing, straightening and cutting unit of sticks for low carbon and stainless steel welding electrode production. The main technological part, capable of producing welding electrode sticks at 10m/sec, was one of the machines that were on display at the latest wire exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany. The line is designed to process low carbon or stainless steel wire rod diameter 5.5mm, draw it down to the final product diameters (2, 2.5, 3.25, 4, 4.8 and 5mm), then clean the wire, straighten it and cut it in the two main product lengths (350 and 450mm). The main characteristic and advantage of this equipment is the capacity to achieve high production speeds maintaining the surface finish, accuracy in stick diameter and length, requested for this type of material, to guarantee smooth operation in the successive steps of the process.

Similar equipment has already been successfully installed in Turkey, Bangladesh, Peru, Bulgaria, Iran, Spain and Germany.

Water-way to produce electricity on the Thames

Golden celebration for Swiss company Swiss cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari AG has brought out an anniversary publication to celebrate its 50-year history. The magazine looks back on a significant era in the history of technology and business, an era which was revolutionary both in Switzerland and worldwide. It is the people that are the focus of this anniversary publication – the Reichles as owner family, the founders Hans Reichle and Renato De-Massari, the employees, customers and industry experts. At the same time, this magazine is a manifesto for the sense of responsibility, the values and the mission of the family company based in Wetzikon in the Zurich Oberland region. Hans Hess, chairman of the board of directors, and CEO Michel Riva also take a long look into the future in their articles. Reichle & De-Massari AG – Switzerland Website : www.rdm.com The Royal Household has agreed to buy the power generated by the Romney Weir generators, guaranteeing an income for the project. Southeast has installed a mini power station on the River Thames at Romney weir to produce electricity using environmentally friendly water-driven Archimedes screw generators. The completed design features two WEG W22 IE3 generators driven by the screws, via a gearbox, to produce electricity for the grid and for Windsor Castle. The scheme is the brainchild of David Dechambeau, managing director of Southeast Power Engineering, who has overseen every step of the design and installation process. The power station has now been generating electricity since July 2013 and is in the final stages of completing testing and commissioning. The power station consists of two Archimedes screws manufactured by Landustrie, each weighing 40 tonnes, connected to the WEG W22 IE3 class premium efficiency generators, which are now delivering 320kW/hr at peak flow, exceeding the original design criteria. The ecological aspect of the project goes further than just sustainable power generation. A ‘fish path’ has been built to allow fish and eels to migrate up the river for the first time in centuries.

One of the main objectives for General Cable in 2014 is to bring together all the different companies under a single and strong brand name. Thus, ECN in Spain, GC Celcat in Portugal and Silec Cable in France will see their company logo change. This change confirms General Cable’s desire to unify all of its brands in Europe after finalising the integration of the group companies in Europe. It also provides an opportunity for the group to strengthen its growth and development strategy, and to establish global communication between the different companies of the group. From now on, ECN, GC Celcat and Silec Cable will be using the same General Cable logo, a single brand to be able to offer customers much more: another hydroelectric plant in Balmoral and the Prince of Wales employs solar panels and wood chip boilers on his estate. The Archimedes screws, however, are the largest project to date, and accord with the Royal Household’s policy to both cut bills and reduce its carbon footprint. The Queen already has

New edition of ‘Copper Busbars: Guidance for Design and Installation’

use in distribution panels and switchboards, but the design considerations for this application are significantly different from long vertical and horizontal busbars. It is a growing market since busbar profiles offer distinct advantages, such as material savings, lower assembly time, lower complexity and reduced scrap. Other chapters cover lifecycle costing, short-circuit effects and jointing techniques for busbars. An annex provides valuable information on busbar coatings, focusing on the reasons for coating them, methods of coating, inspection and maintenance. Busbars are used within electrical installations for distributing power from a supply point to a number of output circuits. They may be used in a variety of configurations ranging from vertical risers – carrying current to each floor of a multi-storey building – to bars used entirely within a distribution panel or within an industrial process. To download the new version, visit http://www.leonardo-energy. org/good-practice-guide/busbar-book-continuing-tradition-1936

The Copper Development Association first published the popular ‘Copper Busbars: Guidance for Design and Installation’ in 1936, and now a new edition adds significant content on busbar profiles and simplified formulae for busbar configurations. It will be of particular benefit to design engineers of electrical distribution systems seeking to design efficient, economic and reliable busbar systems. A total of 108 pages in length and available for free download, Copper Busbars is divided into six chapters. The introductory chapter focuses on materials for busbars, detailing the properties of a conductor material that are essential to achieve a long and reliable service life at the lowest lifetime cost. It reviews conductor materials for busbars and concludes that the required combination of properties is a very good match for copper. The book includes a completely revised chapter on current-carrying capacity. The book also features a brand new chapter on profiles. This content was added because busbar profiles are seeing increasing
