New plant on a green field site for Niehoff

Maschinenfabrik Niehoff GmbH & Co KG is building a new plant at the com- pany’s headquarters in Schwabach near Nuremberg, Germany. The September groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of the development. The first phase of construction, comprising a production area of 17,000m 2 and production-related offices of 1,500m 2 , will include the new locations for assembly, test stand, trials, shipping, paint shop and apprentices workshop. The company is investing €25 million, not including the property purchase, in this first construction phase. Dependent upon future business conditions, the company is planning a second phase of construction of a further 8,000m 2 production area. Niehoff continuously invests in the development of new products and in machinery, equipment andmanufacturing and organisational methods. During the last few years the company has expanded its portfolio by adding braiding machines, stranding machines for data cables and inductive annealers to its product line. The forthcoming headquarters relocation in Schwabach is another contribution to the company’s capacity expansion. Spacious shop floors with optimally designed workplaces will enable a more efficient organisation of process flows and savings for material handling and order processing. The new plant will include a new state-of-the-art paint finishing system.

The IWMA had a highly successful wire China 2008 and the booth in hall W1 at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Centre was very busy during the first three days of the four day event. Together with Tube China there were more than 30,000 visitors. During the trade fair the IWMA received 138 enquiries, of which 88 were from Chinese companies and organisations. A number of new member applications were also received. This was an increase in activity from wire China 2006. According to official statistics provided by the organisers, Messe Düsseldorf China, wire &Tube China 2008 had a total of 1,098 exhibitors from 30 countries and regions, including 708 exhibitors at wire China and 390 exhibitors at Tube China. Of the 1,098 total 352 exhibitors were from overseas and 746 exhibitors from mainland China. The two events occupied 27,275m 2 of exhibitor space and attracted 31,585 trade visitors from 78 countries and regions, including 4,743 from overseas.

The dates of the 2010 event have not yet been confirmed, although it is certain to be in September of that year. More exhibitor space will certainly be required in 2010, given that the 2008 event was considerably over subscribed. The IWMA is considering a suggestion from a major local sponsoring organisation for a supporting ferrous wire conference just before the start of the 2010 exhibition. Those planning to exhibit or attend the 2010 exhibition are advised to book hotel accommodation as soon as the actual dates are announced because the Shanghai Expo 2010 will still be running at that time. Chinese organisations interested in learning more about the IWMA and its membership benefits, as well as contact details for its representative office in China, Sinosteel Zhengzhou Research Institute (SZRISWP), can find this information in the Chinese language section of the IWMAwebsite: www.iwma. org/chinese.cfm or see page 22.

Wire & Cable India 2008 – “a worthwhile exercise” Neither the testing conditions in the temporary exhibition marquees, nor the global economic slowdown that is even affecting the dynamic Indian economy, dampened the enthusiasm of the sub- continent’s industry and trade visitors for thismajor exhibition in Mumbai in November 2008.

Running 20 th –22 nd November 2008 the event was sponsored for the first time by the IWMA who also exhibited on an information booth, manned by Executive Board members John Stanaway and Peter Large and the IWMA’s representative in India, Jeroo Vandrevala. from

▲ Wire & Cable India proved a great success for IWMA

In November 2008 Warbrick International moved from Knutsford, Cheshire, the company base for the past 27 years, to new offices and warehousing located at Appleton Thorn, south of Warrington, Cheshire. Their three manufacturing units, Larmuth Engineering, Dean Brothers, and Chalkmaster, were sold some years ago. Chairman, Paul GWarbrick, has just completed his 50 th year with the family business and reflects on the many changes seen in the wire and cable trades over that period of time. Warrington, his home town, was the centre of the wire and wire-rope industry in UK but, today, all trace of those industries have long since disappeared. Similarly, the North West of England was the home of many large cable producers, which is, sadly, not the case now. The Warbrick company, established in 1946, continues to operate as exclusive agent in the UK and Republic of Ireland for the following USA and European manufacturers of specialised equipment used in the production of wire and cables. The event proved to be very worthwhile for the IWMA in two main respects: the quality and volume of enquiries (which included new members signed up on the stand and which exceeded expectations) and the opportunity to meet with some of the industry’s main players to discuss future involvement in the Indian arena. Traffic on the booth was brisk at most times and many senior people from the industry, not only in India but also from other regions of the world, notably the Middle East, visited the IWMA. As a result of contacts made during the exhibition the IWMA secured nearly 130 enquiries including several firmmembership applications. In the view of the IWMA’s John Stanaway the exhibition was “a most worthwhile exercise” which the association is likely to repeat in 2010. All change in Cheshire

Automated Industrial Machinery (AIM) has introduced another value-added feature to its AccuForm line of CNC wire bending machines. It has been designed for those users who have an organised production system using bar code labels to inventory part numbers. By using a bar code reader the new feature, driven by SmartEditor® (AIM’s programming software), will automatically enter the file name and location of a part from a database. After scanning, the user can enter the number of pieces and boxes (containers) required for a particular production run. Once a list of bar codes has been scanned, Smart Editor® can load all the files/parts that need to be pro- duced at a given time. Up to 50 files can be automatically loaded using this feature. Doug Bidwell of Manufacturing Systems, Inc in Belle Fourche, South Dakota had previously purchased an AccuForm 3D machine. One of the key reasons Doug initially decided to purchase fromAIMwas that he found the programming to be user friendly and easy to learn. When Mr Bidwell asked that it be made easier yet by using a bar code scanner to call up part programs, the response from AIM was to work with Manufacturing Systems to find a solution that met their needs. Doug enthuses, “The scan technology has enabled us to bridge the gap between a programmer and the production crew, now everyone is an AIM machine operator.” AIM Inc – USA Email : sales@aimmachines.com Website : www.aimmachines.com Automation and development are Cometo’s key factors. Since 1983 the company has represented the future at the service of the wire and cable industry. From 6 th – 8 th October this year the Metaltech exhibition will take place at the Imigrantes Exposicões facility in São Paulo, Brazil, the largest city in South America. The fledgling show runs concurrently with Tubotech, the largest and most important pipe and tube exhibition in South America. Once again the IWMA is the major international sponsor of Metaltech and will be exhibiting on a joint booth with sister organisation the International Tube Association (ITA), major international sponsor of Tubotech. Sicetel – National Association for Wire Drawing and Rolling of Ferrous Metals – is the official local sponsor of Metaltech and is fully convinced that the event is the key trade fair for business and technology in the wire sector. The president of Sicetel, Rodrigo de Almeida Prado, states that “for the 2009 edition we shall have as exhibitors important Brazilian and foreign industries from both peripheral sectors as well as the main ones of machinery and equipment, raw materials, lubricants, software and service providers.” Apart from its shared information boothwith the ITA, well equippedwith supportservicesformemberexhibitors and visitors alike, the IWMA is offering its‘Samba’exhibition packages to wire and cable organisations. Most important is the experienced advice that the IWMA can provide to attendees, particularly essential for first time visitors to the exhibition. Metaltech offers free entry to trade visitors and its opening hours are 14:00 to 21:00 hours on each of its three days. Breakthrough in tension control technology

provide a warning signal or output or stop the machine immediately in case of a wire break. The RTM System can pay for itself typically in one to two years by reducing material breaks and eliminating overstressing and excessive slack in wires and cables. Therefore overall finished product throughput is increased. The RTM System also improves the overall quality of the products produced and can open a wire and cable manufacturer up to new markets that demand documented and verifiable manufacturing condition products. There are several RTM systems currently in operation throughout the world. The RTM is the first radio transmitted system in the world designed specifically for the wire and cable industry. It was developed by FMS Force Measuring Systems AG, a Swiss company that designs and manufactures precision devices and systems for tension measurement and control in the wire and cable industry, especially for rotating machinery applications. The company, founded in 1993, has offices in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA. (and power duration), includes a power monitoring system, and is easily combined with the signal transmitter on one plate for easy mounting. The transmitter sends the power signal to the PC for on–screen display of the remaining battery life. Battery life depends on the number of sensor positions on the machine but the battery power packs are designed to produce a minimum of 1 shift of power (8 hours). The batteries are completely rechargeable, reusable, and changeable in only a few seconds. The RTM System can easily be used with existing equipment as it bolts down in a small footprint, utilises standard FMS load cells and amplifiers, and runs on PC software so a new PLC installation is not required to utilise the system. The RTM System digitally monitors tension in real time on up to 32 individual positions and displays the values on a PC screen. The software also includes data logging for each position and records minimum and maximum values for quality assurance purposes. There is also an option available to log data based on feet or metre measurements. Tension control is easy utilising the PC or an output card. The amplifiers or controllers can be parameterised from the PC. Controller parameters can be adjusted from the PC while the machine is running. The system can be set-up to are correct and confirm any updates or corrections. Members are reminded that the IWMA can receive editorials from member organisations at any time for posting on the website, quite apart from editorial submitted for the WCN newsletter, published twice a year. Perhaps the most dramatic innovation is the e-zine, or electronic version of WCN, and there is more about this feature on page 18. The IWMAworks hard to keep thewebsite fresh and relevant to all visitors and to provide the best possible information resource for the wire and cable industry. Updates are frequently made and the site is reviewed at least twice every week. The IWMA is always happy to receive constructive comments and ideas to improve and to develop the website further.

Wire and cable makers have an affordable way to monitor and control tension in individual wires on rotating machines. This technology, from FMS, is called Radio Transmitted Tension Monitoring (RTM). An RTM System can be easily applied on most planetary or tube stranders, bunchers, twisters, or any rotating machinery. It sends the signals by radio transmission thus avoiding the many drawbacks of mechanisms such as slip rings (cost, wear, signal noise, installation issues) and telemetry systems (unidirectional analogue data trans– mission, multi-positional prohibitive cost). RTM technology is secure and stable using industry standard Blue– Tooth technology for signal transmission. The RTM System equipment packages can be configured in various ways to handle nearly any tension measurement or control task. The monitoring system is comprised of tension sensors, tension measuring amplifiers, a bus system with radio transceiver, and software. All of the components are specially designed by FMS for rotating applications (not effected by centrifugal and coriolis forces based on accelerations up to 40g). A wide range of tension sensors are available for any tension requirement, and if closed loop control is required, digital controllers are used instead of measuring amplifiers. The RTM rechargeable battery power pack option comes in three different sizes The IWMA website, www.iwma.org, already receives an impressive number of ‘unique visits’(a more relevant statistic than just ‘hits’) and since the site was completely re-designed in November 2007 these have increased by over 25%. If you have not visited the website recently the IWMA invites you to look at the innovations we have introduced. There is an archive section for older date IWMA editorials, which previously were just deleted. The website now has pages in Russian, Chinese, Turkish and Spanish and will be introducing more soon. Another important new feature is a listing of IWMA member organisations by geographical region in addition to the listing by alphabet. Onwards and upwards – innovations from Upcast ®

Several new and interesting developments have already been introduced into the Upcast system. These include: double- loop inductors; stepless power control for inductors; single- furnace line for 12,000tpa (an extension of the 10,000tpa, single-furnace line to 12,000tpa capacity); a double-furnace line for 40,000tpa; carrier-type cathode charging for double- furnace lines (an adaptation of the standard carrier-type cathode charging system); a “Universal” double coiler for rod diameters of 8mm–25mm and an automatic alloy feeder, designed to be used in double-furnace lines for the production of alloyed coppers such as silver bearing and phosphor deoxidised coppers. Operation of the alloy feeder is synchronised with the automatic

The Upward Continuous Casting method, better known as the Upcast® system, was innovated and developed by Outokumpu in the late 1960s for the production of copper and copper alloy wire rod. In 2006 Upcast celebrated the 35 th anniversary of the startup of the first production unit installed in Outokumpu’s Pori Foundry in Finland. Thankstoitsmodularconstruction each Upcast line is easy to upgrade and expand. This first production line has benefitted from several upgrades to keep it up-to-date and in continuous operation. To date, 170 Upcast casting lines have been delivered worldwide, the majority for oxygen-free copper but around 40 for copper alloys. To meet future challenges the Upcast legacy is carried forward under the banner of a recently formed (2006) company, Upcast Oy. Continuous development has been a characteristic feature of the Upcast technology throughout its history and now, under new ownership, the role of innovation will become even more marked. Descaling specialists USA‘s Wire Lab Company manufactures a comprehensive line of mechanical descaling machinery for steel wire producers. Awidevarietyofmodels allows customers to put in place the Wilco mechanical descaling system which most closely matches their wire drawing requirement, with consideration given to machinery investment, maintenance cost, cost for any consumable items and overall quality requirement of the finished wire product. Simple-to-use basic mechanical descaling systems (such as model 920 Air Jet and model 1030 Water Jet descalers) are well suited for producers of industrial quality wire products where emphasis is on maintaining the lowest possible overall production cost. More feature-rich Wilco descaling systems allow customers to use wire rods of various qualities with the objective being producing a consistently cleaned wire rod suitable for making into higher quality wire products. These Wilco descaling systems (model 1250 and model 1750 automatic wire brush descalers) incorporate the Wilco automatic rod-brushingmachine into the process. Eight circular wire brushes are

melt transfer function and includes a feedback link, for accurate chemical analysis with minimal fluctuation.

positioned around the rod circumference to aggressively clean the rod surface of secondary scale and red rust – both detrimental to producing high quality wire products. More specialisedWilco descaling systems (model 1060 descaling system with lubri- cant precoating and model LRD scale breaker for large diameter rods) satisfy the needs of more specialised producers. The model 1060 as part of the mechanical descaling process applies lubricant precoating compound in the final stage of the mechanical descaling process. Manufacturers of high carbon wire and those working with very high finishing speeds benefit from the increased lubrication established by the precoating compound. The Wilco large rod scale breaker (model LRD) is designed for processing larger rods up to 19mm in diameter. Sheave offset is controlled by hydraulics, thereby allowing simple straight-through string up of the scale breaker. Many manufacturers rely on Wilco lubricant applicators and double die pressure die holders to maximize and maintain lubrication levels throughout the drawing operation. Wilco lubricant applicators are designed to simply “snap on” the rod or wire in the lubricant

section of the die box and then are covered with the dry lubricant. As the wiredrawing machine pulls the rod or wire, the rolls of the lubricant applicator compact the dry lubricant onto the rod or wire. Wilco pressure die holders are designed to force lubricant, under high pressure, onto the surface of the wire as it is being drawn. Installation of a Wilco pressure die holder in the first die box is essential for establishing a significant lubricant film while pressure die holders in the remaining die boxes will maintain such proper lubrication. PWM to exhibit cold welders at Interwire 2009

5.00mm (0.039" to 0.197") diameter copper/aluminium, will operate in normal or automaticmode. Normal mode requires the operator to press a foot pedal four to six times to complete the weld. In automatic mode, the operator simply loads the material, presses a button and the machine does the rest. PWM will also exhibit its M10 and M25 manual machines, ideal for welding fine wire in confined spaces, and the M101 model, which can be bench or trolley- mounted and has a capacity of 1.00mm to 3.60mm (0.040" to 0.141") copper and 1.00mm to 5.00mm (0.040" to 0.197"). EC aluminium. Durable, simple to operate and low maintenance, PWM cold welders are precision engineered to provide strong, reliable permanent bonds, helping manufacturers save materials, cut costs and increase productivity. All welders and dies are designed and manufactured in PWM’s own UK workshops, ensuring total quality control and accountability.

British company PWM (Pressure Welding Machines) – celebrating 25 years of ser- vice to the wire and cable industry this year – will showcase two of its powered cold welders at Interwire 2009. The PWM range will be featured at the show by Amaral Automation Associates (booth 2426), exclusive distributor of PWM cold welding equipment, spares and dies in the US and Canada. Powerful EP500 electro/pneumatic rod welder provides an economical method of joining large rod sections. Virtually no operator training is required and the EP500, like all PWM machines, produces a reliableweld every time, reducingmaterial wastage. Capable of welding copper rod from 5.00mm to 12.50mm (0.197" to 0.492") diameter and aluminium up to 15mm (0.590") the low-energy EP500 usually only requires maintenance every three years. PWM’s best-selling HP100 air/hydraulic model can now be supplied in automatic form. The trolley-mounted HP100 auto, which has a capacity of 1.00mm to
