1939
The year that WAR with Germany started.
The A.G.M. was held on 20th February. Chair was taken by W.Ryan, the President,
and was attended by over 120 members.
A letter was read from Mrs M.A.Marshall suggesting that a Ladies Committee be
formed with a view to organising social functions and making social events more
attractive. The Committee promised to consider same.
W.Tattersall resigned his seat on the Committee being at complete variance with the
Executive's principles and methods of management.
Profit for the year was £223.16.6d.
Elections: A.V.Buttress, T.A.Hanson, F.C.Barker, H.F.Houghton and J.Gash were
re-elected to their various offices. J.Gash was elected Chairman and the office of
V/Chairnan was not filled. J.T.Hodgson was elected V/Captain, J.H.Simmonds
Auditor.
Committee; W.Oliver, G.V.Hickson, T.H.Blackburn, H.Wilson, A.Clarke.
A resolution authorising the Club to borrow a sum not exceeding £1,000 on
mortgage for the purpose of alterations and extensions, was approved.
The Committee's Report commenced with a statement that the outbreak of War was
bound to effect the activities of the Club. Profit for the year amounted to £70 being
the third successive year that the Profit had been reported.
Honorariums; Hon.Sec. was voted £60, Hon.Treasurer £22.10.0d and
Hon.Assis.Sec: £7.10.0d.
Membership was 421, 103 being Lady members, 33 Associate members, 16 Visiting
Members and 6 Honorary members - a decrease of 23.
CLUBHOUSE. An Appeal for funds in connection with the proposed Clubhouse
alterations and extensions was reported to be disappointing. Plans had been
approved and passed and the Architect estimated the cost of same would be £1,300.
The tender of Norman Thompson for £1,475.14.11d was accepted. Lloyds Bank Ltd.
agreed to an overdraft of £1,500 for this purpose. An Extraordinary General Meeting
was held to authorise the Committee to charge this amount on mortgage to the Club.
In August it was decided that in view of the international situation the work of
alterations and additions to the Club be postponed and instructions were approved
for windows to be screened. Arrangements however were proceeded with to open
out the front of the Club as a Car Park. Appreciation was expressed at the manner
in which members continued to support the Clubhouse since the declaration of War.
An effort in the early part of the year to organise Sunday Concerts was abandoned
as the response to same was not encouraging.
