SPEED EVENTS at Shepherds Hill were held on Easter Monday, Whit.Monday and
August Bank Holiday Monday and miniature T.T.Races were held at Ormesby Hall
by the courtesy of Major J.B.Pennyman and the Evening Gazette put up a Challenge
Trophy.
Four events were run –
the Junior over 10 laps won by Jack Brett, Velocette - J.H.Graves Cup
the Senior - 10 laps " G.G.Bensley - Gilchrist Bowl. He was also successful in
winning the Ormesby Handicap Race over 20 laps for the N.Eastern Gazette
Challenge Cup.
R.H.Just sustained a fractured leg and was later granted the sum of £5 from Club
funds.
Public support being insufficient Major Pennyman decided not to allow any further
meetings on that course.
SALTBURN SPEED TRIALS. Decided to offer the sum of £.5 each to Noel Pope and
Eric Fernihaugh towards their expenses should they attain a speed of 110 m.p.h. on
the Flying Kilo course and that a further £5 be paid to the one breaking the record by
the greatest margin.
Suggested that Mr "Erimus” be engaged and that anyone finding him should be
given a small prize.
It having been agreed in 1934 that the meeting should not be run if the start was to
be earlier than 5 p.m. This year's event being timed to start at 2 p.m. and it was
agreed that if the event was run in 1937 it should not start until 5 p.m.
The Event was held on Saturday June 27th. An entry of 31 Motorcycles and 11 Cars
was considered disappointing as the prize money for car events had been
considerably increased.
The winners were:-
20-mile Yorkshire Championshipup to 250c.c.-A.W.Armstrong, Rudge, speed
56.6m.p.h.
Up to 350 c.c. - J.B.Moss, Velocette, speed 66.7 m.p.h.
Up to 500 c.c. - F.H.Marshall, Norton, speed 69.10 m.p.h.
Unlimited - Dr. J.K.Swanston, speed 71.99 m.p.h.
20-mile Handicap Race - A.W.Armstrong, Excelsior, speed 62.5 m;p.h.
20-mile Handicap Race for Cars up to 5000 c.c. - A.H.Hutchinson, Hutchinson
Special, speed 58.06 m.p.h.
The record for the 20-mile Race standing at 68.09 m.p.h. was broken twice as will be
seen from the speeds recorded by F.H.Marshall and Dr. J.K.Swanston.
MEMBERSHIP. For the year amounted to 346, an increase of 21. 100 new
members were elected including G.A.Bensley,.R.Birkett, Miss M.Liddle, W.Poulton,
G.V.Hickson, Mrs Bunting.
The Deaths of C.Burton, Alec Thompson, (a former V/President) and C.W.Sibbald,
were recorded,
FINANCE. A loss of £59.5.2d was reported due to two causes - A loss on Outdoor
Sporting Events and a decrease in income from Special Efforts.
FRED W.DIXON won the Ulster T.T.Race (Cars) and congratulations were sent to
him.
