Stockton's loss of 933 and retained the Stockton & D.M.C. Shield for another 12
months.
The Winter Trial scheduled for 26th Dec. was postponed due to the state of the
course and was run on 9th Jan.1938, winner being E.G.Pipe.
Shepherds Hill. In view of the loss sustained in 1956 it was decided to run only one
event, this on Whit.Monday, May 17th, when there was a profit of £50.
Saltbum Speed Trials.
Were held on 5rd July, entry of 31 motorcycles and 12 cars. A feature of the
Meeting was the riding of T.McEwan who established a new record for the course of
74.35 m.p.h. winning the 20-mile Yorkshire Championship race unlimited c.c. for
which Dr. J.K.Swanson had set up a record in 1936 of 71.99 m.p.h. McEwan also
broke the record for the 600 c.c. race with a speed of 73.86 m.p.h. his riding
throughout the Meeting being a model of consistency.
Other winners were:- J.B.Moss (Norton) 350 c.c. championship, speed 6l.l8 m.p.h.
D.Parkinson (Excelsior) 250 c.c. " " 55.58 "
20-mile Handicap race proved to be a great struggle between T,McEwan and
J.B.Moss and was won by McEwan with Moss 5secs. behind. Speed 73.24 m.p.h.
20-mile Handicap race for cars was won by J.W.Birnard (J.W.B) at a speed of
56.33m.p.h. winning the N.Eastern Gazette Cup.
Valuable assistance was given by lady members resulting in the income from the
sale of programmes balancing the expenditure.
A Pluvious Policy to cover the sum of £50 in case of rain, was taken out.
The Income amounted to £209.3.3d and the Expenditure which took no account of
Postage, Stationery and overhead charges, amounted to £206.8.5d.
Scott Trial. Difficulties over the organisation of this Trial in the West Riding of
Yorkshire became apparent and the Stockton Club were approached with a view to
Middlesbrough and Stockton making joint application to run the event in 1938.
