1938
The year the Scott Trial came North and Neville Chamberlain came back from
Munich waving a scrap of paper declaring - "PEACE IN OUR TIME",, But
subsequently preparations for War were intensified.
The A.G.M. was held on 17th Feb. The Chair was taken by T.H.Blackburn and over
80 members were present. Membership amounted to 444 comprising 256 Full
members, 120 Lady members, 33 Visiting members, 32 Associate members and 5
honorary members, an increase of 16.
The Profit for the year of £261.10.6d was announced.
The proposal to limit the number of Lady members, as recorded in 1937, was
defeated.
A proposal (Rule 6) empowering the Committee to annually confer honorary
membership on such persons they may deem worthy was carried and an increase in
subscriptions (Rule 7) to take place from the 1st January 1939, 12/6d for Full
members and 7/6d for Lady members was carried.
Elections: President: W.Ryan, who then assumed the Chair.
V/Presidents: W.Armstrong, C.Allen, T.Ainsley, A.Blackburn, A,Chapman, J.F.Dixon,
J.Gilchrist, G.W.Liddle, R.H.Richardson, C.N.Sadler, W.Upton.
Committee: A.W.Armstrong, W.Tattersall, C.L.Hodgson, H.W.Barker, J.T.Jobborn.
The Hon.Sec: Hon.Assis.Sec; Hon.Press Sec: Hon, Treasurer, Captain and Auditor
were re-elected. G.G.Bensley was elected V/Captain.
The deaths of A.J.Ross, C.Warne and H.Anderson were reported.
At the first meeting of the Committee Jack Gash was elected Chairman and it is
recorded that his work on behalf of the Associate membership section had gingered
up our outside events.
C.L.Hodgson was elected V/Chairman and a Competitions & Games Sub-Committee
was also elected,
Fred W.Dixon was elected an honorary member.
The resignation of G.O.Liddle, son of G.W.Liddle, the first honorary Secretary was
accepted with regret.
The President, W.Ryan, said that he thought the discussions which took place at the
A.G.M. could not be passed without comment and he regretted to note that members
of the Committee were found to be in opposition to the Committee's proposals and
regretted to note that the Club appeared to be spreading into factions. It was agreed
that a Special Meeting be convened to consider the question of lady members in
Club life. This special meeting was held on 7th April when the proposal that "this
meeting is of the opinion that the restriction on further election of ladies is desirable
in some manner" was considered. It was felt that most of the dissatisfaction and
