WAR CLOUDS. The menacing attitude of Germany under Hitler was beginning to
make itself felt and a letter from the Town Clerk respecting Air Raid Precautions was
considered. The Club intimated their willingness to assist in any way possible.
The premier social function was the Annual Ball held in the Dorman Hall on Dec 28th
attended by 320 guests. The change of venue was the result of the Linthorpe Lawn
Tennis Assn. complaining about the clashing of their event and ours. The Town Hall
Manager and Town Clerk wrote stating that the Club could not have the Town Hall
on the date provisionally reserved; Monday, Dec.28th and it was therefore
transferred to the Dorman Hall,, Joe Hurst's Band had been booked to play in the
Town Hall, asked to be released from his engagement and the Blue Rhythm Boys
Orchestra was booked in his place for the sun of £21.
The popular weekly Whist Drive & Dance was continued and Mrs Hodgson and Mrs
Ward organised a number of Bridge Drives from which a donation of £9.1.4d was
made to the Club Funds.
The indoor social activities were wound up on Dec.51st with a Social Evening when
all games were free and dancing continued until midnight. A contract Bridge section
was formed with a membership of 21.
The Golf Section continued its activities and 9 different events were arranged.
Chairman of the Section was T.Ainsley, Hon.Socy. H.F.Houghton, Captain F.Carey,
W.Balmer, Treasurer.
The sum of two guineas was sent to the Cleveland & S.Durham Institute for the Blind
being the proceeds of the Weastell Trophy Competition.
A visit was paid to the Club by Jos.Zahradnik, a Czechoslavakian National who was
touring the World by motor. He was presented with a Club Badge and given a
donation of 5/0d.
TRIALS.
The R.A.C. gave notice of a new set of General Competition Rules the effect of
which gave any person who had his road driving licence suspended would be
ordinarily prohibited from holding an International Competition Licence and
requesting the Club to report any member guilty of unbecoming conduct which would
not ordinarily result in him having his driving licence suspended. It was agreed to
support the R.A.C. in their effort to prevent the sport being brought into disrepute by
such conduct.
RELIABILITY TRIALS. Three were run in conjunction with the Stockton Club, two of
which were under the Group system. Two had to be cancelled for lack of entries.
The first was a Team Trial held on 25th Feb., the winning team were F.F.Keeler,
R.L.Percy, Stockton Club and R.A.W.Dunn, Middlesbrough Club, the premier award
being the G.H.Blackburn Memorial Cup.
A Group Trial held on May 24th was organised by the Stockton Club, the premier
award for the Middlesbrough member ~ the.John Gjers Cup, winner T.A.Hanson.
The Winter Trial held on Dec.27th. The event was of a sporting nature and the
organisation similar to that of the Scott Trial, winner was G.G.Bensley who took the
A.W.Foster Trophy and as a result of these three events the Middlesbrough Club
won back the Shield held by the Stockton Club with a score of 81/3 pts. against 72/3.
