Which is more beautiful? I see Hundreds ofseagulls soaring together Then I see One seagull sailing alone High above, through acloud I see a jet plane Is the beauty entirely inthem Or partly in me too? Where does the Supremebeauty lie? In each one Or is there more beauty in the gift that I can decide? Kathy Chandler

Holding Hands

Desperate fingers delve into a cocoon of warmth (Our Father, who art in Heaven) Nerves tingle, skin sighs (Hallowed be Thy name) The message is massaged into the hand of one from the other (Thy kingdom come) With soft caresses and loving strokes (Thy will be done) An Embellishment of faith Communicating through the language of touch (For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory) The message needs no interpreter (Now and forever) All is safe (Amen)

BISHOP LEO T. MAHER

Bishop Maher serves USD as its Chairman of the Board of Trustees. His association with the university goes back to the merger of the College for Women and the College for Men in 1972, a move in which he was the driving force. His generosity is marked by the donation of the St. Francis Seminary to USD. He has instituted many social services in the local Catholic community, and has achieved the formation of many new parishes throughoutSouthern California.

This year the Board catalysed the explosive growth of the USD campus with the completion and opening of Our Lady Of Guadalupe Hall and the ground breaking for the new School of Busi ness Administration and the Man chester Executive Conference Center. Groundbreaking was also the order of the day for the much needed expan sion of the Copley Library. That man

is a success who has lived well laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had Unknown

As chair of Program Board the Vice-President coordinated the program ming efforts ofall directors and organizations. She was also a member of Budget Committee and Senate. Should anything have happenedto our beloved president Ms. Emme would have been the next one "in charge." Aside from being Vice-President, Carolyn enjoyed being a "nor mal" student.

PRESIDENT Serving his second year as A.S.B. President, Vince Guilin's prime responsibility as "The Big Guy" wasto oversee the activitiesof the A.S.B and to continuein his quest to "make the A.S. knowledgeable of the university system." CONTROLLER One of the "invisible men of ASB", Steve Welch works his fingers to the bone as the ASB's bookkeeper. Steve enjoys hi job because it allows him the opportunity not onlyto tone his skills in accounting and business, but also to be an intergral part of ASB. Working closely with Dave Goddard and advising Dave on how much ASB money to spend, Steve is the watch dog for our $30 a semester ASB fee. Make sure Dave doesn't spendit all at once, Steve!

SECRETARY OF FINANCE Holding the office of Secretary of Finance Dave Goddard constitutes budgeting andover seeing all ASB financial transactions. It also constitutes receiving notes such as, "Dear Dave, Please sendmoney!" Dave takes itall in stride and does his best to accommodate everyone. As financial advisor to all ASB related organiza tions (Program Board, Senate, I.C.C.) Dave han dles everythingfrom contracts to petty cash. On a good day Dave can be seen hiding under his desk soas not to be spottedby club representa tives desiring money.

DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION Left to right: Johnna Matranga, Daryl-Lynn Lalli- Director of Information, TomBurns. The Director of Information's primary task is to make sure the work on upcoming events gets around on campus. Daryl Lynn Lalli, appointee to this newly establishedpost, found the position "interesting and fun". According to Daryl Lynn, "Basically I get to paint a lot of p sters. Oh yeah, I also get the inside trackon beach parties!" Her committee of10 helpers, when not out scurrying through the party grapevine, assisted Daryl Lynn in spreading news about Laserium, the Scream ing Memes, George Plimpton, and many other campus happenings.

SOCIAL CHAIRMAN As Social Chairman, Mike "How do you say his last name?" Wisniewski s responsible for plan ning and supervising such spectacular events as the HomecomingDance, the Spring Ball, Laser ium, andthe ASB Disneyland trip. Or is it "Wiznewski"?Tell us Mike.

SECRETARY OF STUDENT SERVICES

"This is a job for Superman." But since the guy couldn't make it he sent Tom Burke to us instead. Charged with maintaining an open li e between students and administration. Tomwas the liason for matters from Food Service to Health Service. Housing, commuter transporta tion, and Campus Ministry were also under Tom's jurisdiction. With a man like Tomwork ing for us, who needed Clark Kent?

COMMUNITY SERVICES Meg Heidrick and Matty Sandoval. See Mat ty's smiling face. See Meg's smiling face. See the smiling faces of many inthe community because of the workMeg and Matty didas Directors of Community Services. M & M (as we lovingly call them) helped to coordinate activities that allowed students an opportunity to reach out and interact with USD's neighborhood. Activi ties such as the highly successful annual Senior Outreach Weekend andthe CannedFood Drive during Thanksgiving permitted students the chance to "come down off the hill" and partici pate in getting to know their community be ter. The TiajuanaOrphanage Trip, Christmas Car oling at retirement homes, and the coordination of the Big Brother/Big Sister Program ( first at USD) were other eventswhich offeredstudents the chance to meet new people and do a good deed. Meg and Matty also began anew commit- tee-The Executive Core Group- which consisted of representatives from all on-campus service organizations. This committee met to support each other on various projects and to co-sponsor other projects. See Matty's smiling face. See Meg's smiling face. Seea job well done.

CULTURAL ARTS DIRECTOR The Cultural Arts Board Director Joel Sweimler is charged with bringing dance and m sic companies, arranging group and discount rates at performances in San Diego. This year Cultural Arts brought Mark Twain alive, aJazz festival on the bay and "Sophisticated Ladies , and in the spring they brought us Cabaret and the circus. As the USDPoster Boy for "International Male" and the officialrepresen tative of the collective interest of I.C.C., Guy was also a member of the Budget Committee, Program Board, and Senate. FRESHMEN SENATORS

The Freshmen Senators, Joe LaMantia III and Steve Greene, though new at thisbusiness, have been hard at work this year, doing such things as canvassing door-to-door to get ac quainted with other Frosh, and to hear their idea and input on different issues concering USD Undergrads. They also worked hard on this year'sFrosh Homecoming Float.

SOPHOMORE SENATORS

The Sophomore Senators, John Napoleon and Chris Kanzius have really accomplished a lot this year. SOCIAL COMMITTEE

The Social Events Commit tee helps in all areas of plan ning and running the Social Events that are organized through the office of Social Chairman. During the year 1982-83, these events included, TG's, Homecoming, Spring Ball, Disneyland Trip, Laser- ium, Concerts, and many more. SPECIAL EVENTS

Busily out planning-you guessed it- special events, the Special Events Committee was unavailable for pictures (They don't want me to tell you that the picture to the right is a pic ture of them, so don't tell them I told you, okay?). Headed by Social Chairman Mike Wis- nienwski, the Special Events Committee deals with the "really big events" oncampus coordinating and implement ing them. (They're really cute though, aren't they?). These are the people to thank when everything goes right, (such cu- ties-couldn't you just go up and kiss them on the cheek?) A nice group ofkids- andvery aquati- cally inclined. My kind of peo ple.

Seriously, the Budget Com mittee was charged with ap proving each programming event expenditure. Headed by Secretary of Finance Dave Goddard, the BudgetCommit tee did its utmost to prevent the frivilous use of ASB funds. Highly respected by all other ASB committees (you have to or you won't get the bucks), when Budget Committee spoke, people listened.

SENATE

L to R: John Cappetta, Mark Tunney, John Napolean, Steve Green, Dee Moore, Tim Dunn, Joe LaMantiar, Dave Goddard, Carolyn Emme, Rod Valdivia, Maria Grightbill, Tom Burns, Tim Beaulieu, Cindy Beezley, Guy Webb, Mike Wisniewski, Vince Kasperick, Chris Kanzius, Tom Burke, Tom Cosgrove This ecstatic group of people composed theAS Senate (ASS, for short). Incredibly happy to have beenassigned the duty of overseeing all ASB related events, the '82-'83 Senate fell all over themselves with joy and enthusiasm at servingthe students and providing an at mosphere conducive to quality academic and social exper iences. Okay kids, you can stop smiling now.

Besides a smelly room, you get the ICC. ICC was in charge of every club's funding, pro gramming of events and providing campus activities such as dances, speakers, and bakesales (thank God for those!). ICC coordinated activities and created club interaction. These particular individuals threw air planes, talked on the phone, did their homework, or slept duringthe meet ings. It was rumored that once or twice they discussed issues for specific clubs as aboard of approval and pro gramming body. This board was head ed by one popular Guy. (Sorry Guy, we couldn't resist.)

ELECTION COMMITTEE

Top L to R: Tricia Ray, Ann Tommey (Chairperson), Angela Tarantino, Gina Arcaro, CarolDamon Bottom L to R: Vince Skahill, Vince Kasperick (Advisor) Under the auspices of fair politics, the Election Commit tee has hit new heights inim posing the proper regulations upon the would—be senators, presidents, and queens of this campus. An increase in active member enrollment has aided the processes set down by the chairperson, Ann Tommey. These people unselfishly gave thier time and energy to keep the democratic way of voting alive and well. True, there were hard times, but these paled in the comparison of the rewards that were heaped upon this group of dedicated Americans. Their highlight came at Home coming, when they were privy to the election of the queen be fore anyone else.

SPEAKERS BUREAU

L to R: Mark Killeen, George Plimp ton (Speaker), John Phillips Headed by Mark Killeen and John (Bucky) Phillips, the Speakers Bureau brought top rate speakers such as George Plimpton and Dr. JimTunney (yes, he is Marks dad) to the USD campus. Mark and John worked hard the entire year to allow the USDcommunity the opportunity to be entertained by prominent speakers.
