General Strike. This was also the year of the General Strike. It was agreed that all
events be postponed and that all members be earnestly requested to assist in
maintaining the essential services.
The Opening Run took place to Richmond on Good Friday. A Motorcycle Football
Match, Yorkshire versus Durham was organised together with a Gymkhana. The
sum of £22,15,0d was received from a collection & entry fees and after 5 guineas
had been retained to cover expenses the balance of £17.10.0d was sent to the
Mayor of Richmond for his charity.
The following Trials were run:-
Novice Trial for the G.M.Liddle Memorial Cup on April 19th - winner
D.Whitehouse. 60 entries.
Ryan Cup - winner W.Tattersall - (This was. a non-stop event).
Gjers Cup - winner H.I.Pybus.
John Gjers Cup - F.C.Barker. The performance of C.J.Morrish in piloting a 3½h.p.
combination around the course was noted and a special bronze medal was
awarded.
Fuel Consumption Trial - The Sadler Bowl having been won outright by Jim
Gilchrist, he presented a Rose Bowl to the Club to ensure the continuation of this
event. An all-car entry was received, the winner being Egerton Price.
Saltbum Speed Trials were held on Saturday, July 18th. The day was marred by a
fatal accident which befell Norman Collin.
The Flying Kilo record was broken by A.Greenwood on a 980 Brough Superior,
speed being 105.52 m.p.h. which increased the existing record by 4 m.p.h.
The 250 c.c. 20-mile Yorkshire Championship Race - winner G.L.Reynard, speed
50.99mph.
350 c.c. - winner H.Whitfield, speed 60.60 m.p.h.
500 c.c. - winner W.Wilkinson, speed 61.64 m.p.h.
1000 c.c. - winner T.Simister, speed 60.20 m.p.h.
R.F.Parkinson in the Flying Kilo recorded 82.85 m.p.h. and Harry Whitfield 78.77
m.p.h. A feature of the meeting was the appearance of Bert (H) Le Vack who had
transferred from the Jap Engine Co. to New Hudsons. His speed on the Flying Kilo
was 93.99 m.p.h,
The 10-mile handicap race for the G.H. Blackburn Memorial Cup confined to Club
members was won by H.Whitfield, speed of 60.20 m.p.h., 2nd A.W.Armstrong, 59.02
m.p.h., and 3rd J.T.Jobbom, 57.95 m.p.h.
The 50-mile handicap race was won by G.L.Reynard with a time of 59mins.40.8
secs. It was estimated that nearly 20,000 witnessed the event.
