This is not a pipe.

It’s actually an entry ticket to huge markets. Be- cause what you’re looking at is a longitudinally weld- ed pipe that’s been normalized to oil and gas pipe standards. But there’s a catch. Normalizing isn’t easy. Especially for today’s gauges and alloys. It de- mands expertise in metallurgy, control software and precise heat delivery. The good news however is that these are areas in which we specialize—making us a leader in pipe weld-seam normalizing. Also, with more than 50 years’ induction heating experience, we’re experts at using technology to open new commercial opportu- nities for our customers.

EFD Induction is Europe’s no 1—and the world’s no. 2—induction company. Our systems are used to weld, normalize, anneal, harden, temper, braze, melt, forge, bond, cure and pre- and post-heat. So whatever your pipe normalizing needs, you can turn to us for a solution. And since we’re present around the world, that solution is probably closer than you think. Contact us today. There’s a vast oil and gas pipe market out there. We’ll help you get a share of it. Learn more about our pipe welding and normalizing solutions at F abtech 2014, Booth # C150.

This issue we have a feature on furnaces and heat treatment and take a look at three huge industry shows – Tube India 2014 in Mumbai, EuroBLECH 2014 in Hanover, Germany, and FABTECH in Atlanta, USA. The magazine will, of course, be represented at all of these shows so come and visit members of our team at their booths. The magazine will also be freely distributed to the many thousands of visitors. I will be travelling to Atlanta, USA, in November for FABTECH. It will be my second visit to the city, which I found a very welcoming destination. Even in the two years since I last visited, the US, and the southern States in particular, have experienced a growing boom in energy- related industries such as oil and shale, so I expect the tube industry to be in a very positive mood following an up and down few years since the global financial crisis. The editorial deadline date for our November issue is 1 September with the advertising deadline on 12 September. The November magazine will be distributed at Tube Arabia 2015. We have features on handling, manufacturing profiles and bent tubes, and advances in measuring and marking. Please send your stories to me at rory@intras.co.uk

LINSINGER Multi-cut is for inline-operation in ERW lines as a flying tube-cut off aggregate requiring highest possible availability. It utilises four cutters working simultaneously around the pipe for a surprisingly fast cut. If one of the four has an early lifetime end, it goes into a park position. The remaining three tool heads cut tubes continuing until the scheduled tool change. Thereafter there is a decrease of the tube line speed or an increase of the cutting speed. LINSINGER machines are engineered and manufactured in Austria. LINSINGER offers an extended product range for the tube and pipe industry. It covers mainly circular sawing machines for cutting of steel billets and tube layers, milling machines for edge preparation for wind tower construction and shipbuilding and pipe bevelling machines for bevelling of tube ends.

Thermatool equipment selected for mill in Ecuador KUBIEC-Conduit, Ecuador, has

was fitted with a TRC series double cut die-set for in-line dimple free cutting. Operators benefit from the Alpha double cut die-set by getting a shear cut which leaves no internal swarf as a result of the cut. This means no post-processing washing of the product, as would be required when cutting conduit with a cold saw. The Alpha flying shear cut-offs are also known for their blade life, achieving up to 40,000 cuts between vertical blade changes.

The ability to store and retrieve weld parameters for consistent runs from shift-to-shift increases process repeatability. The Thermatool HAZControl technology HF welder has precise heat input control, resulting in the small ID bead (uncut), making it suitable for conduit. The features combine to minimise scrap and maintain high quality welds, a key to making conduit profitably. Kubiec- Conduit has several other Thermatool HAZControl technology HF welders installed and operating successfully in its other plants. The company also installed an Alpha flying shear cut-off for cutting conduit at up to 150MPM (500FPM). The Alpha

selected Thermatool to supply a 200kW HAZControl™ technology welder and an Alpha ® flying shear Mach 2 cut-off. The two new pieces of equipment were selected for high-speed production of conduit to keep up with growing demand in South America. The Thermatool HAZControl technology welder allows the operator to select an optimal welding frequency as well as to reliably and consistently maintain the selected power and frequency through a mill run at any given time. The recipe-driven HF welding system also gives operators the ability to precisely repeat vee length using the Vee Axis™ control.

Scan celebrates 30 years SCAN Systems is celebrating 30 years of servicing the OCTG industry with its most recent innovation, ESP (enhanced signal processing). The company released the program commercially last year after spending six years in research and development. The software, along with electronic upgrade advancements including sophisticated algorithms and newly designed sensors, has advanced EMI technology. “We are passionate about research and development and have a long- standing tradition of asking how do we make things better, more efficiently and just how far can we push the envelope?” said Matt Rutledge, vice-president and general manager at Scan Systems. Scan Systems designed and manufactured the first portable EDM unit specifically designed to introduce artificial flaws in metal products. In the late 1980s, the company started commercially offering the EDM Notch Master unit. At the same time, another teamwithin the company was working on two products for pipe service operations. The results of their efforts are the Tally- Rite measuring systems, automated pipe tally equipment that reduces direct labour and human errors. In 1990 Scan created TDS (tubular data system), a PC-based software system for OCTG inventory manage- ment and control within pipe service companies. As specialised inventory control and business management soft- ware, it was specifically designed to manage and monitor the storage, han- dling, inspection and reporting of OCTG materials. A real-time inventory control software, TDSW allows customers to access up-to-the-minute changes in the OCTG material within their facility. With Scan Systems’ roots being in the pipe inspection business, it was only natural the company would have a group of engineers and support staff that develops, manufactures and supports new OCTG pipe inspection equipment and technologies.

Industry News

Entering the next generation GALLIUM, approaching three decades in the tube equipment industry, has seen the transition of the industry in a number of fundamental ways: from being based in import-restricted India to the new open-market, from an era with low manpower costs, to one where manpower costs are rapidly increasing, and the steel production capacity of India has increased to 75 million tons. Over the last three decades even the applications of tubes and pipes have gone through major revision. During this period Gallium has seen two generations of leaders who have been the flag bearer of the company. The company, co-founded by AK Dutta and YK Bhatia under the leadership of Mr Dutta, created a wealth of technology through international collaborations. Mr Bhatia consolidated and started market capitalising and carried on improving and introducing critical technologies. The company is now looking ahead to the next generation. Rajesh Meena, an engineer with experience in the equipment industry in general and tube industry in particular, is being identified as the ‘Gen-Next’ leader of Gallium. Coming from a background of machine building to production of pipes, Mr Meena intends to bring in a strong techno-economic perception to the equipment made and supplied in terms of the need of the buyer. It is a mistake to propose technology to a customer that does not pay off for his range of applications and needs. It is important that the right set of technology, automation and tooling is provided so that the capital investment made by the buyer keeps them competitive. Email: mktg@galliumindia.com Website: www.galliumindia.com Non-destructive test equipment There should also be scope for upgrading the technology incrementally; the machines should ‘plug and play’. With these aims at its core, the company is looking to customise its equipment so that the return on investment of the investor/buyer is kept as a main focus. Gallium wants to break free from the culture of selling equipment that is only high on production, fully automated and highly priced, and move towards equipment that is customised to produce what the specific customer requires as well as automation that suits the skill set of the buyer and with a price that suits their budget. hardness, alloy and some dimensions. Echomac ultrasonic instrumentation and rotaries provide detection of ID/ OD and internal defects in welded or seamless precision drawn tubes made of chrome steel, austenite, titanium alloys, copper and other metals. Ultrasonic technology is mandated by most heat exchanger manufacturers to ensure that only the highest quality tubes will find service in any high- pressure ASME type applications. MAC has also supplied many OCTG producers with Rotoflux flux leakage test systems to comply with critical API 5CT and 5L, and ASTM E570 requirements for API inspection of OCTG products. The Rotoflux can detect defects as small as 5 per cent of the wall on the OD and ID in tube and pipe from 38 to 500mm in diameter. A complete range of standard and custom design handling components and systems are also available from MAC to precisely hold and position test instruments, test coils, rotaries and drives. Software controls allow complete command of test benches and reporting of test results from multiple instruments.

MAGNETICAnalysis Corp (MAC) will be featuring non-destructive test equipment and systems for tube and pipe at Tube India. The company will be exhibiting the MultiMac ® eddy current instrumentation and rotary and a Varimac ® eddy current comparator, at the stand of Inmar Corp, MAC’s representative in India. Complete information on all of MAC’s test systems, including the Echomac ® ultrasonic and Rotoflux ® flux leakage test systems will be

available. MAC recently provided an Echomac ultrasonic inspection system to Ratnamani Metals & Tubes Ltd, a major stainless tube producer in India. MAC eddy current test systems are used to detect transverse, short or longitudinal seam type surface defects in magnetic and non-magnetic tubing used in many applications. The Varimac eddy current comparator provides 100 per cent inspection of fasteners and metal parts for heat treatment,

TubItaly 2015 in Piacenza TUBITALY 2015 is scheduled from 20 to 22 May 2015 at the fairgrounds in Piacenza, Italy. After the positive results of the first edition, which took place last November, TubItaly has set new and more ambitious targets to further establish the importance of the sector. The event will show the best of tubes, rods, pipes and profiles, and technologies for their production and processing. The slogan used to promote the event, “Piping all forms of energy, we nourish life”, was chosen to emphasise the fundamental role of pipes and pipelines, and how they transport the resources that are part of our everyday life, such as water, gas or oil. The event was brought forward from November to May in order to offer TubItaly visitors the opportunity to also visit EXPO 2015, taking place in nearby Milan from May to October. TubItaly will benefit from the strong international appeal of EXPO, and this will help to increase the number of operators who will visit the exhibition in Piacenza in

order to find the main players in the sector of tubes, pipes and profiles. Piacenza and its province also offer strong appeal for tourists, with art and culture, culinary tradition, and historic villages and castles. The exhibition is supported by Federacciai, Istituto Italiano del Rame, and Fondazione Promozione Acciaio. Piacenza Expo SpA – Italy Email: commerciale@piacenzaexpo.it Website: www.tubitaly.it

Tube mill to be delivered OFFICINE MTM SpA (MTM Tube Mills) will be delivering a complete new tube mill system this autumn to Fati Steel, located in Varennes, Quebec, Canada. This will be Fati Steel’s second MTM tube mill. The MTM 070 C ST HF tube mill will consist of an automated, hands- free entry system, a rafted tube mill, in-line TCT cold-saw cut-off and a fully automatic packaging system. In 2007, Fati Steel wanted to add ERW tube production to its portfolio of products and services. Inexperienced in producing tubing, Fati needed a supplier that could not only provide the tube-making equipment, but could

also provide training in the technical know-how for the production of high- quality tubing. The company has now purchased its second MTM line, to keep up with its current production demands. As stated by the customer, the key advantages of the MTM equipment is the simplicity of use, ease of maintenance, and the ability to reliably produce quality product at high production rates. MTM currently has four complete tube mills under production scheduled for shipment in 2014, with another mill set to arrive in North America in October. Officine MTM SpA has been providing entry equipment, tube mills, cut-off saws and packaging equipment to the tube mill, roll forming and automotive industry since 1972. The company works with its customers to determine the exact solution best suited to their needs.

Cold rolling technology in dedicated business unit

MAG’s cold rolling machines (series XK 2, 6, 8 and 12) cover a broad range of applications. Regarding toothwork, diameters of up to 120mm and module 3 are possible. In addition to highly complex rolling tools, the new business unit will manufacture prototypes or small batches for customers. Rolf Ziller, head of development and sales, cold rolling technology, commented, “We provide our customers with a complete solution. To achieve this, we utilise our core competence in metal forming and our manufacturing is carried out with adapted machine and tool concepts specifically designed for the purpose. “The customer environment and the need for the necessary automation technology is also taken into account of course. We will be developing the service side in this compact unit with a distinct focus on technology to ensure we meet our customers’ needs even more precisely.” XK cold rolling machines are energy efficient thanks to their electro- mechanical axle drive, and can be used for large-scale production of splines on drive components. The XK 12 at the top end of the product range is designed for longer and more solid shafts up to 5,000mm in length. The demands of the Asian market are met by the parallel manufacture and supply of series XK 2 and XK 6 in MAG’s plant in Changchun. “The XK 6 in particular is a very robust machine with simplified tool settings for a broad range of applications,” said Mr Schmid. “Here, we are particularly targeting the manufacturers in the Asian sub- contractor market who mass-produce drive shafts both flexibly and cost- efficiently.” New machines and rolling tools are not the only focus of MAG’s cold rolling team – the customer base for rebuilds, retrofits and re-toolings of older Ex- Cell-O machines is also experiencing growth and is an area that they are strongly focused on.

MAG is a specialist in cold rolling of splines in power trains. The Ex-Cell-O technology can be found in modern, energy-efficient and hydraulic-free high performance cold rolling machines of the XK series. The machine tool manufacturer has now grouped the company’s cold rolling specialists together in the new cold rolling technology business unit. As part of the company’s technology- related restructuring, MAG has combined all cold rolling technology departments at its site in Eislingen, Germany. Sales, development, design and manufacturing of gearing technology are now grouped more closely, and can more easily discuss matters and come to an agreement. “It is well known that lean structures with short decision-making paths lead to quicker decisions and solutions and

it is not only our customers that profit from this,” said Jürgen Schmid, head of the new business unit.

Solutions for forming sections SCHWARZE-Robitec will be showing its latest solutions for the forming of plates and sections at EuroBLECH. The focus will be on two new bending machine series, Platebender PB for plates, and Sectionbender SB for sections. The company will also be presenting the new control for its tube bending machines, and the TorqueFormer, which forms sections with complex isometrics torsion superimposed and three-dimensional. Depending on the required version, the new PB series plate bending machines process plates with a material thickness from only a few millimetres up to 125mm. They are optionally equipped with three or four rollers. The number of rollers on the new SB series section bending machine is also variable. In their standard equipment the machines have eleven axes to create a larger bandwidth of bending contours. As the SB machines process both flat or angle irons as well as T-, I-, C- and

special sections in various formats and dimensions, the technology is suitable for use in a diverse range of industry sectors. Thanks to the large bending moment, the SB series also forms particularly difficult sections with ease. The patented TorqueFormer offers the advantages of the optimised bending kinematics of cold bending, enabling flexible manufacture of complex topologies with high dimensional and contouring accuracy.
