Competitions & Social Runs
During the year the following events took place:-
6 Hill Climbs on of which, on Yearby Bank, was abandoned owing to a
regrettable accident to W Haidens. Later it was reported that Messers Sadler &
Co. were paying the whole of the expenses incurred through his accidents.
Speed Judging Competition, Fuel Consumption Trial, 6 Reliability Trials,
Consistency Competition. 4 Club Runs to Sutton Bank, Farndale, Buttertubs and
Shepherds Gorge.
The trial for the Scott Bowl was won by F Shepherd. Rankin S Scoon again
offered a Silver Bowl to be won outright and Gold Medals were offered by G A
Mackie and J,Ogilvie. The winner was A.V Buttress. The McAdam Trial was won
by A.V,Buttress.
The first Saltburn Speed Trials were held on 9
th
July. This was one of the 3 events
allocated by the Yorkshire Centre, being open to members of any club associated
with the Centre. It proved to be the best supported and most successful Centre event
of the season attracting 228 entries including some of the best riders in the country.
The trophies won were subsequently presented at the Yorkshire Centrets Dinner, the
Club being represented by John Gjers, G.B,Craig, A V Foster, F.W..Dixon,
J.T,Jobborn, W.Ryan and H,Williams.
The 3 official Clqmpionship Challenge Trophies were won:
350 cc, class - Hugh Mason, speed - 45,07 m.p.h.
600 cc, class -. J.Whalley, speed - 50,46 m.p.h.
(he pushed home to win the T.T.Race)
1000cc, class - F.W.Dixon, speed - 55,53 m.p.h.
The solid Silver Cup presented by John Gjers for the fastest time of the day was won
by F,W, Dixon with a speed of 89.48 m.p.h. over the flying kilometre on a Harley
Davison.
55 specially struck medallions were given to successful competitors amongst whom
were Miss Elsie Arsmstrong, Stan Jones, G Wallis, J.T,Jobborn, A.Deuchars,
E.B,Young, C,N,Sadler, W,Robinson and T.W.Denney, all members.
The Gjers Cup Trial was held on 20
th
July over the usual 200 mile course in the
Lake District - an entry of 21. The winner was C.W.Smith who won the Cup
outright having won it 3 times. Sidecar prize J,R, and Mrs Jenney. 350cc class
L.Dickinson, New Hudson Cup for the Best Novice by F,Shepherd. The
President, with his proverbial generosity provided another Cup in its place in
order that the Club could still have the Premier event of the season, the Gjers
Reliability Trial and it was hoped to make it a 2 day event in 1922.
On July 27
th
the 45 miles trial took place with 16 competitors, winner
A.V,Buttress.
The Fuel Consumption Trial over a 30 mile course was won by J.Gilchrist.
