Europe and US up stake in Asia European and American wire companies, it seems, are quickly catching on to the booming industry in the Far East and India. In this issue of Wire & Cable ASIA there is Sampsistemi opening an office in Bangalore (page 22), while Borouge and Borealis took its Wire and Cable Academy (page 14) on the road to China. So it would appear that despite the frailties of the economy, generally in Europe, wire and cable companies are still heading east where the pickings can be lucrative. However, for a week in March it will be the turn of Europe to play host to what is, undoubtedly, the biggest and most important wire show in the calendar – wire 2012 in Düsseldorf. A large number of companies from China, India and Taiwan have registered for the exhibition and will be exhibiting at the Fairgrounds. More than 1,200 companies are taking up 592,000ft 2 of net exhibiting space in what appears to be an eagerly anticipated show. You can also find Switzerland’s ABB securing an order for equipment for a substation in India (also page 22).

further chapter in the firm’s distinguished history. As part of the automotive project the business was required to design and build a four station semi-automatic welding system against a tough delivery date. The four-station solution integrates a fully automated welding cell with full control and programming of all welding parameters. Full process monitoring is included in conjunction with vision monitoring systems for component checking and product bar code reading. A key feature of the system is remote system access which enables UK staff to monitor in real-time, the actual weld process taking place in China and also provide system updates and live support. A big selling feature of the MacGregor equipment is its ability to reliably weld small, critical components, making it an ideal solution for many industries including medical, aerospace as well as automotive electronics and lighting. Graham MacGregor, managing director, said: “For many years MacGregor Welding Systems has been involved in providing its worldwide blue-chip client base with process development work. However, in the last few years we have seen an increase in demand from places like China for the development of bespoke fully automated and semi-automated solutions, which is the reason we are now expanding our operation.” MacGregor offers an extensive range of micro joining equipment for both resistance and micro-arc welding. The range includes the ‘m’ series resistance welding units and the recently introduced fully pro- grammable ‘PAP’ arc welding units. All products include many advanced features including graphical displays for programming and displaying the actual process. All units are PC compatible for remote programming and data logging. Tratos supplies cable for 36 new port cranes in the Middle East

modified the internal cable design, tightening the structure against the internal relative movement to accommodate high speed applications.  Tratosflex and Tratosgreen cables are suited for use on one-way reels with operation speeds of 200-300m/min, two-way reels with operation speeds of 200m/min, end rollers with an operation speed of 180m/min and central cable rollers with an operation speed of 60m/min. They operate in temperatures ranging from -30°C to +80°C. Tratosgreen has the added benefit of reduced halogens and reduced toxicity. The new Konecranes ASCs – the company’s first delivery in the Middle East featuring Tratos cable – are due for installation in Summer 2012. Tratosflex and Tratosgreen are part of a range of Tratos cables to suit all types of reeling applications, whether it be on drum reeling, festoon or vertical.  The cables can supply power, control and signalling functions including fibre-optic cables and components.   Tratos Group Alma Srl – Italy Fax : +39 057 579 4246 Email : info@tratos.it Website : www.tratos.eu

CABLE manufacturer and supplier Tratos has won a contract from Konecranes to supply 36 cranes’ cable lengths.  The cranes have been bought by Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) for an automated container yard system in the United Arab Emirates’ Khalifa Port. Khalifa Port is being built over five phases, with an initial capacity of two million TEU (containers) and eight million tons of general cargo. It will take over traffic from the Mina Zayed port which is due to close in 2012 as well as take on the new cargo generated by the Khalifa Industrial Zone, which is set to become one of the world’s largest industrial areas. To handle the largest ships at sea and such a vast quantity of cargo, Khalifa Port features the latest technology, including Konecranes’ Automated Stacking Cranes (ASC) and a container terminal operating system.   The ASCs are being used with Tratosflex and Tratosgreen medium voltage rubber insulated and sheathed drum reeling cables. These cables are ideal for ASCs as specified for Khalifa Port as they have been designed to combat the common problem of twisting that affects cables reeling at high speed.   Twisting makes cable cores elongate unevenly which in turn leads to conductors on the outer layer of a strand facing a greater risk of being broken. A broken cable reeling at high speed is dangerous and can cause extensive and costly damage to equipment. Tratosflex is different from other reeling cables in that Tratos engineers have

Tratos
